Two girls charged in case of bullied Florida girl who committed suicide

Rebecca Sedwick, 12, jumped to her death from a third-story cement plant structure in central Florida on Sept. 10 after being verbally, physically and cyber bullied throughout 2012 and 2013. Two girls were arrested on Monday in connection with her death and charged with aggravated stalking.

By Elisha Fieldstadt, NBC News

Two girls, ages 12 and 14, have been charged with aggravated stalking for what a Florida sheriff described Tuesday as "maliciously harassing" a 12-year-old girl who jumped from a tower to her death.

The middle school students were booked into a juvenile detention center on Monday night and released to their parents under house arrest, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Rebecca Sedwick, 12, jumped to her death from a third-story cement plant structure in central Florida on Sept. 10 after being verbally, physically and cyber bullied throughout 2012 and 2013, Judd said.

Rebecca Sedwick's mother says she jumped to her death after being terrorized online.  NBC's Charles Hadlock reports.

At a Tuesday news conference, Judd said investigators were in the midst of gathering information from social media sites about the bullies’ interactions with Sedwick, but a Facebook post by the 14-year-old which read, “yes I bullied Rebecca and she killed herself, but I don’t give a (expletive)” prompted Monday's arrests.

Judd said detectives arrested the 12-year-old, who was one of Sedwick’s “primary” bullies, because they decided, “We can’t leave her out there. Who else is she going to torment, who else is she going to harass?”

While bullying is not a crime, Judd said, the girls have been charged with aggravated stalking — a third degree felony — because the victim was younger than 16 years old.

In addition to the 14-year-old's Facebook confession, Judd said both girls made "incriminating statements" when they were arrested.

He said the girls’ case would proceed in the juvenile system and any punishment would depend on juvenile sanctions, adding, “it won’t be severe enough, in my estimation, for this conduct.”

Judd said the 14-year-old started to “torment” Sedwick in 2012 and according to a Polk County Sheriff’s statement, other children at the school also started bullying Sedwick to avoid being bullied themselves. The 12-year-old was Sedwick’s former “best friend,” Judd said.

Sedwick’s mother removed her daughter from the school, but the bullying continued online, where the 14-year-old wrote harassing insults, including that Sedwick should “kill herself” and “drink bleach and die,” Judd said.

“We believe that it certainly contributed to [Sedwick] jumping from the cement towers,” Judd said.

Shouldn't Your Speaker System Transform? 500GB's For $35, Sony RX100

In my ripe old age of 27 I've become a strong advocate for a simple home theater, "downsizing" my projector, 7.1 speaker system, and A/V receiver to a wireless soundbar and quality plasma screen. This Panasonic 2.1 system is a great option for those who want to save a lot of money, a lot of space, and a lot of effort in building out their living room entertainment center. Lose the wires and add multiple speaker configuration options. It's a win-win. $168. [Amazon]

Among social conservatives, a pocketbook message

WASHINGTON (AP) — Evangelicals in search of a new political standard-bearer are looking for more than just opposition to gay marriage and abortion.

At an annual meeting of social conservatives, a new wave of Republican senators auditioned Friday before prominent activists and religious leaders, deriding President Barack Obama's health care law and his handling of the economy and foreign policy.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas described a nation teetering on "the edge of a cliff." Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said U.S. foreign policy needed to stop a "war on Christianity." Sen. Mike Lee of Utah said the nation's economic problems represented "moral threats" to the stability of families.

"We can't stop talking about the importance of our values and our culture," said Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. "We can't stop talking about them because the moral well-being of our people is directly linked to their economic well-being."

Social conservatives gathered at the annual Values Voter Summit while congressional Republicans struggled for an agreement with Obama on ending the government shutdown, now in its 12th day, and avoiding an economic default.

Few in the audience at the conference expressed interest in backing down from efforts to keep money from or delay Obama's health care law, a primary driver of the impasse.

Marlene Kellett of Columbia, Md., said Republicans needed to hold firm in their opposition to the law. But she expressed pessimism that Republicans would make progress.

"I'm very opposed to Obamacare — it's a disaster," Kellett said. "But I'm not feeling very positive about it. So often the Republicans cave and they can't seem to get what they want."

Adrienne Grizzell of Lexington, Ky., said the accumulation of nearly $17 trillion in debt — the source of a debate over whether to raise the nation's borrowing limit — is too often shrugged off. "It's as if, 'No, it's not a problem, let's keep spending,'" she said. "Nobody is saying, 'OK, we've going to start spending less.'"

While social issues are a touchstone, speaker after speaker stressed pocketbook issues a year after Democrats vilified GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney as being oblivious to the needs of middle-class families during tough economic times.

Cruz, whose speech was interrupted several times by immigration overhaul advocates, said the health law and Obama's spending priorities had put the nation on the wrong track. "We have a couple of years to turn this country around or we go off the cliff into oblivion," he said.

Lee said issues such as a lack of economic opportunity, stagnant wages and spiraling housing costs represented "moral threats to families' stability." Families, he said, "are bearing the brunt of all of these things and as a result too many are falling behind."

Rubio said too many families are struggling to pay for child care and grappling with student loan debts. Paul devoted his remarks to foreign policy, describing attacks on Christianity in the Muslim world.

The list of speakers included onetime GOP presidential candidates, too: former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Some at the conference said they were actively seeking a new group of conservatives to rally behind — and made clear that they don't want capitulation.

"We don't have enough Ted Cruzes and Marco Rubios," said Jerry Skirvin, who runs a marketing firm in Lynchburg, Va.

"We have too many John McCains and Lindsey Grahams," he said, identifying GOP senators from Arizona and South Carolina, respectively, whom conservatives often accuse of seeking conciliation with Democrats.

Before the summit, Cruz and Paul held separate meetings with a group of evangelical leaders, including Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, which sponsored the event, former presidential candidate Gary Bauer and Robert Fischer, a South Dakota businessman. The senators were joined by their wives during the session and discussed their faith and views on issues.

From Key West to Amelia Island, Florida has haunted destinations

It's the season for ghost hunting and there are numerous destinations that offer potential encounters with departed souls.

Put these haunted stops on your itinerary, if the spirit moves you.

The Florida House Inn, Fernandina Beach (floridahouseinn.com): Built in 1857 the Florida House Inn is considered the state's oldest operating hotel. Its 17 rooms, English-style pub, parlor, dining room, courtyard and gardens also have inspired reports of paranormal activity by spirits that include a morose, mourning man and a madam who apparently likes to get into bed with guests in her room. The inn is part of the haunted trolley and carriage tours in Fernandina Beach. Cost ranges from $15 to $30.

St. Augustine Lighthouse, St. Augustine (staugustinelighthouse.com): By day, the St. Augustine Lighthouse offers a family-friendly glimpse into the maritime lifestyle of the Nation's Oldest City. At night, however, the tower is one of the featured stops on trolley tours devoted to St. Augustine's paranormal activity. The lighthouse offers nighttime ghost tours of the tower. Cost: $20-$25.

Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, Cassadaga (cassadaga.org): There was a time when the legitimate spiritualist community of this tiny town in west Volusia County didn't welcome an onslaught of Halloween visitors. Nowadays, however, the 118-year-old community embraces the curious with weekly Nighttime Encounter Orb Tours. Guests are invited to bring digital cameras for tours that start at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays at the camp bookstore. Cost is $25.

Spook Hill, Lake Wales (cityoflakewales.com): In the not-so-scary department, this hill in Polk County — where cars defy gravity by rolling backward uphill — is accompanied by its own ghostly explanation. According to legend, an Indian chief killed a huge gator that had been terrorizing a village. The phenomenon of Spook Hill is either the chief protecting his land from beyond the grave or the gator taking its revenge.

Robert the Doll, East Martello Museum, Key West (ghostsandgravestones.com/key-west): Key West has the reputation of being one of the most haunted spots in the United States. Of all the spirit tales, the most famous is the saga of Robert the Doll, a voodoo doll that supposedly emits evil giggles and scurries around in the old East Martello Fort. Trolley tours: $26.25-$33.60.
