Peer pressure trumps 'thin' ideals in the media

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Peers exert a greater influence on teenage girls' dissatisfaction with their bodies than do thin ideals in television or social media use, according to new research by Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson and colleagues from Texas A & M International University in the U.S. Their study is published online in Springer's Journal of Youth and Adolescence.

The influence of the media on body image, life satisfaction, and symptoms of eating disorders in teenage girls is a hot debate. Some experts believe that media influences on body dissatisfaction may extend to symptoms of eating disorders. Others contend that the link between media exposure and body image is inconsistent. Ferguson and his team's work shed light on this debate, by comparing the effects of peers and the media on girls' body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms, and life satisfaction in general. To assess exposure to thin ideals in the media, the researchers asked 237 young Hispanic girls, aged 10 to 17 years, to name their 3 favorite television shows and to rate the attractiveness of the female actresses in those shows.

They also assessed their body weight and height, whether or not they had feelings of inferiority in response to other girls (peer competition), and how often they used social media. The girls were then asked about how they felt about their bodies, whether they had any eating disorder symptoms, and how satisfied they were, overall, with their lives. Six months later, the researchers repeated these measures in 101 teen girls from the initial group. On the whole, neither television exposure to thin ideals nor social media use predicted body dissatisfaction, whereas peer competition did. Similarly, television exposure and social media use did not predict eating disorder symptoms.

Peer competition predicted eating disorder symptoms long-term, though not in the short term. Interestingly, both peer competition and social media use predicted lower life satisfaction.

The authors conclude, "Our results suggest that only peer competition, not television or social media use, predict negative outcomes for body image. This suggests that peer competition is more salient to body and eating issues in teenage girls. However, social media use may provide a new arena for peer competition, even if it does not directly influence negative body outcomes."

USCCB, in Supreme Court briefs, defends marriage as union of man ...

CWN - January 30, 2013

As the Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has filed briefs in their defense.

Arguing in defense of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the USCCB brief noted that

there is no fundamental right to marry a person of the same sex. Such a claim must be rejected because it does not satisfy the test to which this Court adheres in determining whether an asserted right is fundamental. Specifically, civil recognition of same-sex relationships is not deeply rooted in the Nation?s history and tradition?quite the opposite is true. Nor can the treatment of such relationships as marriages be said to be implicit in the concept of ordered liberty, such that neither liberty nor justice would exist if they were sacrificed ? This Court?s decisions describing marriage as a fundamental right plainly contemplate the union of one man and one woman.

The USCCB brief also argued that ??sexual orientation? is not a classification that should trigger heightened scrutiny,? as discrimination on the basis of sex or race would. Homosexual behavior ?is not a trait attributable from conception or birth,? the brief states, adding:

Elevation of sexual orientation to a quasi-suspect class would immerse federal courts into a quagmire of family law issues reserved to the states, issues for which the Judicial Branch is not institutionally suited ? Application of heightened scrutiny would hinder the ability of legislatures to create accommodations for those with religious or moral objections to homosexual conduct.

?The claim that homosexual persons today have ?no ability to attract the attention of the lawmakers? is frivolous,? the brief added.

The brief concluded:

If this Court were to conclude that the Constitution requires a redefinition of marriage to include persons in same-sex relationships?a requirement that we believe cannot reasonably be inferred from the Constitution?it is unclear where the logical stopping point would be. This Court will ultimately be asked why other interpersonal relationships are not entitled to similar inclusion, and why other ?barriers? to marriage (such as those posed by youth, kinship, or multiplicity of parties) should not also have to be struck down as inconsistent with this redefinition.

In its defense of Proposition 8 ? the 2008 California ballot initiative defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman ? the USCCB argued that

first, as a matter of simple biology, the union of one man and one woman is the only union capable of creating new life. Second, the People of California could reasonably conclude that a home with a mother and a father is the optimal environment for raising children, an ideal that Proposition 8 encourages and promotes. Given both the unique capacity for reproduction and unique value of homes with a mother and father, it is reasonable for a State to treat the union of one man and one woman as having a public value that is absent from other intimate interpersonal relationships.

?Proposition 8 is not rendered invalid because some of its supporters were informed by religious or moral considerations,? the brief continued. ?Many, if not most, of the significant social and political movements in our Nation?s history were based on precisely such considerations.?

?The current debate specifically concerns the meaning of marriage and the proposal to redefine marriage, not the phenomenon of same-sex attraction and the persons who experience such attraction,? the brief added. ?For this reason, the suggestion that opposition to the redefinition of marriage is equivalent to an animus against people who experience same-sex attraction is particularly offensive and plainly wrong ? The further suggestion that opposition to homosexual conduct is simply animus against persons who engage in such conduct is also erroneous and offensive.?

Killer Kitties? Cats Kill Billions Of Creatures Every Year

Out For Lunch? Researchers estimate that billions of birds and small mammals are killed by cats in the U.S. annually.

Vishnevskiy Vasiliy/iStockphoto

The battle between cat lovers and bird lovers has been going on for a long time. Cats and birds just don't mix. But trying to get a handle on how many birds and other animals are being killed by cats isn't easy. Just figuring out how many cats there are is tough enough.

"Cats are really hard to count," says Pete Marra, an animal ecologist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. He and his colleagues actually got a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to try to estimate the number of animals being killed by people, including through the effects of human activities, buildings and pets. They looked at things like wind turbines, cars, pesticides and ? domestic cats.

Marra says Americans own about 84 million of them. "And of those, about 40 to 70 percent are allowed to go outside," Marra says. "And we estimate that about 50 to 80 percent of those are actually hunters."

That means as many as 47 million pet cats are out there killing prey. Marra says they also looked at cats he calls "un-owned" ? feral cats, barn cats and strays. Based on previous studies, he estimates there could be anywhere from 30 million to 80 million of those in the U.S., most of them out hunting.

The next challenge was to try to figure out how many birds and small animals all these cats were killing. They looked at all the available data, and when they finished crunching the numbers, Marra says, he was shocked by what they found.

Previous studies had suggested that cats kill about 500 million birds a year. Marra's group came up with something very different. "We estimate that cats kill somewhere between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds a year," Marra says. "For mammals, it's upward of about 15 billion."

Marra says based on those new figures, cat-caused mortality far exceeds deaths from other sources, like collisions with cars or wind turbines.

And even though the new numbers are much higher than anything calculated before, he thinks they're in the right ballpark. "We're pretty confident," Marra says. "We felt like we only used the best studies out there. We eliminated studies that had small sample sizes or were only conducted for short durations. And we eliminated studies that had really, really high estimates, or really, really low estimates. So we tried to be as conservative as possible."

Marra says most of the deaths are being caused by feral cats, but pet cats do play a role. According to his calculations, pet cats are responsible for about a tenth of the cat-related mammal deaths and close to a third of the bird deaths.

He says overall, the number of birds and small animals being killed are high enough that cats and their hunting could be causing some wildlife populations to decline in some areas. But he says it will take more work to figure out which species are being most affected. His study is published in the journal Nature Communications.

Foursquare gives business owners their own app to manage specials, track customer visits

Foursquare just recently tweaked its privacy policy to share more user information with local businesses, and it looks like it's already putting some of that data to use in a new app now that the policy has gone into effect. Launched today for the iPhone and iPod touch, Foursquare for Business is just that -- an app designed for business owners instead of customers. In addition to letting managers upload new photos and refresh their specials regularly, it'll also give them a peek into customer activity at their business (or businesses), including information on check-ins and the ability to keep an eye on their top customers. As Foursquare notes in its privacy policy, though, you can opt out of having that check-in information visible to businesses in the app's privacy settings.

IBM upgrades Connections as unified communications meets social ...

As carriers face more competition in the enterprise market, they might want to keep tabs on how the core enterprise vendors are updating their communications platforms with support for social media. The social enterprise movement was one of the big telecom trends of 2012, and at least one vendor, IBM (NYSE: IBM), is suggesting that will be the case on 2013.

The networking giant this week announced an upgrade of its Connections enterprise social networking platform to enable new features, such as usage monitoring to track how employees are collaborating, as well as engaging with customers via Twitter, Facebook and other social media. The upgrade will be available in March.

IBM Connections 4.5 also will include tools to help manage brainstorming sessions, support for document and content management capabilities, and greater levels of integration with Microsoft Outlook. A later release will feature an IBM Employee Experience Suite integrating human resources management applications from recent IBM acquisition Kenexa. The company also will enhance its IBM Customer Experience Suite, which will allow marketing departments easier methods of pushing heir content to social networks.

The upgrades come as carriers are trying to figure out how to sell to increasingly social enteprises and tap into that trend to increase sales of connectivity and unified communications services, among other enterprise offerings. IBM's moves may show that the company should be viewed as a potential partner for carriers?as well as a competitor?along the lines of Microsoft, which has been adding to its unified communications strengths with its own new focus on social enterprise via its Yammer acquisition.

Commission!

Hi I?m looking for someone that could make a map for me. It?s for an RP I?m running at the moment and I?d like a detailed map that can be a fun or whimsical.

The setting is a Steampunk Post-apocalyptic desert called ?The Flats? and the RP has been running for some time now so your work will be seen and not just forgotten about and buried. You can learn more here. roleplay/white-group/

As it is for an RP there are certain criteria the Map must meet like positioning of locations etc. Apart from that it?s all up to you the legend, markings and decals. I have a very basic paint version that I?l send to intrestred folks so they can see positioning etc. (If you think I?m going to post a crummy paint image in a forum for artists you?re crazy.)

Anyway I hope someone can come up with something as my RPers would love to see one.

Vonn beats Maze to win World Cup giant slalom

MARIBOR, Slovenia (AP) ? Lindsey Vonn showed she can beat Tina Maze in the Slovenian's best discipline and on her home snow.

While it may be too late to challenge her biggest rival for the overall World Cup title, Vonn is looking like Maze's biggest challenger at next month's world championships.

The American proved that she has fully recovered from a recent illness by winning a World Cup giant slalom, her second win in two weeks.

Vonn was third behind Maze after the first run but overcame several errors in the second to put down the fastest time and create a margin that Maze couldn't overcome. Vonn won in 2 minutes, 22.2 seconds for her first GS victory since last March.

"In the second run I decided, OK, it's all or nothing, I had to go for it," Vonn said. "It's been a rough year for me in GS, so it's just perfect."

Maze still clinched her third giant slalom discipline title by placing second. Maze had a near-perfect first run, but a poor start to the second cost her valuable time and she finished 0.08 seconds behind Vonn.

With her 59th World Cup win overall, Vonn's just three away from equaling Annemarie Moser Proell's record on the women's side. She earned her first GS victory since last March and back-to-back wins after taking the downhill last week at Cortina D'Ampezzo.

Vonn took nearly a month off over the holidays to recover from an intestinal illness that landed her in the hospital in November. While her break allowed Maze to build an even bigger lead in the overall standings, Vonn said it's clear she made the right decision.

"A couple of weeks ago, everyone was thinking I was crazy taking this time off," Vonn said. "But I felt my body wasn't ready. Now I am ready."

Austria's Anna Fenninger was third, 0.57 seconds behind Vonn.

Maze's closest rival in the GS, Kathrin Zettel, only managed sixth. Maze is 238 points ahead of Zettel with just two GS races remaining this season.

Maze also extended her lead in the overall standing to 748 points against her closest challenger, Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch, who finished fourth. Vonn stands another 66 points back in third, having missed several races while sidelined.

The 29-year-old Maze performed in front of a passionate home crowd and was 0.48 seconds ahead of Vonn after dominating the first run.

However, she ran wide at the start of the second, leaving her 0.13 seconds behind her rival at the first checkpoint. Despite the cheers of the fans urging her on, Maze couldn't make up the time and finished with tears in her eyes.

"I had a mistake in the flat part," Maze said. "In my final run, I just had too many mistakes but I am very satisfied with second."

Maze has won four of the seven giant slaloms this season, making the podium in the other three.

"I have been working so hard this year for this GS crystal globe," she said. "Now I've won it, I feel freed and can look forward."

While the overall World Cup title may be Maze's to win or lose, Vonn will be a favorite to dominate next month's world championships in Schladming, Austria.

Witch-hunting "Hansel & Gretel" wins box office

(Reuters) - A grown-up "Hansel & Gretel" grabbed the weekend box office title, pulling in $19 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales with its reinvention of the classic fairy tale characters as fierce bounty hunters.

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" knocked last weekend's winner, low-budget horror flick "Mama," into second place. "Mama" earned $12.8 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates, followed by "Silver Linings Playbook" with $10 million.

CIA drama "Zero Dark Thirty" came in fourth with $9.8 million.

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star in "Hansel & Gretel" as crossbow-wielding adult siblings who travel the world to take out evil witches. MGM and Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures produced the action comedy for about $50 million. Paramount had predicted opening weekend sales in the high-teens or low $20 million range.

Don Harris, Paramount's president of distribution, said the film performed well despite the very cold temperatures and snow that hit the eastern United States.

"We are pleased that we were on our number on a worldwide basis. It looks like we are on or exceeding our numbers, but we did get dinged with the weather on Friday," he said in an interview.

"The impact of the weather was certainly more than I had predicted."

"Mama" features Jessica Chastain as a woman forced to take care of two orphaned nieces who have been living in the woods. The $15 million production has now earned $48.6 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters through two weekends.

Chastain also stars in "Zero Dark Thirty" in an Oscar-nominated role as a dogged CIA agent searching for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The best picture nominee, which has sparked debate over depictions of torture, has grossed $69.9 million since its release in late December.

"Silver Linings Playbook," another Oscar contender, stars Bradley Cooper as a former mental patient trying to rebuild his life with the help of a young widow played by Jennifer Lawrence. Total sales for "Silver Linings" reached $69.46 million.

New crime thriller "Parker" finished in fifth place, taking in $7 million at domestic theaters. The film is based on a series of novels by Donald E. Westlake and stars Jason Statham as a thief seeking revenge against a crew that double-crossed him. Jennifer Lopez plays a woman who helps with his mission.

"Movie 43," a raunchy new comedy with an ensemble of Hollywood directors and stars, settled for seventh place. The film is a series of related short films about three kids scouring the Internet to find the world's most-banned movie. Stars making appearances include Huge Jackman, Seth MacFarlane, Kate Winslet and Dennis Quaid. Privately held Relativity Media produced the film for about $6 million.

"Mama" was distributed by Universal Studios, a division of Comcast Corp. Sony Corp's movie studio released "Zero Dark Thirty." "Parker" was released by independent studio FilmDistrict. The Weinstein Co distributed "Silver Linings Playbook."

91% Amour

All Critics (129) | Top Critics (34) | Fresh (118) | Rotten (11)

Each actor draws on a lifetime's worth of experience, performing with grace and rare, uncompromising realism.

There's nowhere to hide: The film cuts no corners and stings with the authenticity of life's fragility.

The movie avoids melodrama; instead, it's just extraordinarily intimate, with touches of visual poetry like the pigeon that gets into the apartment and won't leave, an image of our own heedless tenacity.

The film is a graphic portrayal of the unfunny end game we're all fated to play; the title is just a simple declaration of how best to play it.

"Amour" is also unforgettable and one of a kind, two hours of torment that, in the end, you will probably not regret.

Small, sure and stunningly acted, this is a picture of exacting control, which is to be expected from Haneke, whose works include Cache and The White Ribbon.

A viewer may want to watch Amour, because it is a work of art.

A bitter, pitiless piece of work. We can admire its components, but we're repulsed by its vision.

Haneke's self-indulgent approach is getting old to me. His devoted fans will like it, but others will most likely be scratching their heads trying to figure out how this got a Best Picture nomination.

It's upsetting material lined with lead by Haneke, who searches for the meaning of love but can't help but dwell on the details of decay.

Amour is as heartbreaking and real as it gets.

Tough and beautiful, it secures Haneke's reputation as one of the world's best.

Two of the world's best actors, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, play Amour's octogenarian couple, so it's surprising that the characters aren't very interesting.

Haneke addresses the ravaging effects of aging in a starkly intimate way but Amour oddly lacks affectivity. Something that should be overflowing with emotion is strangely as sterile as Georges and Anne's Parisian apartment.

unforgettable portrait of old age

The audacious performances by both veteran actors are wonderful, and the film never resorts to cheap sentimentality.

Powerful and well-acted, this drama meticulously captures the pain and perils of aging in a way that will be hard to forget.

Haneke treats Georges and Anne with absolute respect, never pandering to sentiment or clich? and most assuredly not sugarcoating the experience of walking one's partner through suffering, toward death.

Haneke doesn't offer easy solutions or pat emotions. He merely offers us a chance to eavesdrop and holds a mirror up to our own fears of old age, hopes for love, and challenges through life.

A confident, lovingly articulated mood piece about a subject that is universal, yet rarely told.

Refinance without an attorney - Zillow Mortgage Advice

Hi Experts,
I'm doing a no-cash out jumbo refinance on my primary as rates are 1.5% lower. 70% LTV, 800 FICA and no issues with income. Qualified without issue directly with a bank (3.55% for those that are interested).
I'll do a cema which saves 6K after fees over paying the NY 1% tax. Title company say they will do a reduced rate as the original loan is only 2 years old.
My existing lender said they will do cema to new lender and their attorney says 10-15 days for that.
With all that said do I need my own attorney? I get theres a bunch of admin to do and someone has to organize title, recording. closing etc but can I just get the banks attorney to do that?
Thanks.

American Programmer Outsources Job to China

A U.S. company got a shock when it discovered its systems were being accessed by someone in China.

Bob was the man you wouldn't suspect of any wrongdoing; 40s, nebbish, good at his job - one of the best programmers in the office, in fact - never complained, and always got a good review from management, who he emailed every day to update on his progress. Trouble was, that email was his only significant work contribution. Everything else was being done by the Chinese programmer to whom Bob had outsourced his job, at a fraction of his six figure salary.

The U.S. critical infrastructure company lucky enough to have Bob on its payroll first found out about the scam when it conducted a routine log review, trying to make sure its telecommuting employees were on the job. When it noticed an anomalous log-in apparently originating in China and using Bob's identity, its first thought was espionage, perhaps involving some sophisticated malware; all the more so because its log-in system was supposed to be highly secure, with two-factor authentication, utilizing a fob that Bob was supposed to have on his person.

Then it dug deeper, and discovered Bob's daily work routine consisted of:

9:00 a.m. - Arrive and surf Reddit for a couple of hours. Watch cat videos
11:30 a.m. - Take lunch
1:00 p.m. - Ebay time.
2:00 - ish p.m Facebook updates - LinkedIn
4:30 p.m. - End of day update e-mail to management.
5:00 p.m. - Go home

Alas, poor Bob. His web of secrets soon unraveled. That oh-so secure system with its fancy fob had been undone by FedEx, for Bob had simply mailed the doodad to his Chinese confederate. It turned out that this was not Bob's first time to the rodeo; evidence suggested that he'd been pulling the same trick elsewhere, raking in hundreds of thousands in fees while paying his subcontractor about fifty grand.

Nice work, if you can get it ...

Cliff Is Averted! : Steve Sipress | Small-Business Marketing & Growth ...

cliff

No ? I don?t mean the ?Fiscal Cliff? that the politicians and media created and built into The Top Story On Every American?s Mind last month.

I mean the cliff that failing companies fall off when they move from Stage 3 to Stage 4 of Failure, as explained by Jim Collins in his book, ?How The Mighty Fall.?

I?m talking here about one company in particular: GKIC (formerly ?Glazer-Kennedy Insider?s Circle?).

Yes, that?s the local Chicago corporation whose troubles we?ve been following here over the past couple of months. It?s been a lively discussion, with some thoughtful and constructive comments (mixed in with a lot of bitter and angry ones).

(Catch up on previous posts by clicking on them in the ?Recent Posts? list to the bottom right.)

So?

What am I talking about when I say that ?the cliff has been averted??

As you know if you?ve been following this blog for the past couple of months, or if you?ve read Jim Collins? book, or by checking out the chart below?

The Five Stages Of Decline

When a failing company continues to deny its own risk and peril long enough, it ?falls off a cliff? from Stage 3 to Stage 4, and starts grasping for salvation, taking desperate measures to try to rebound and recover.

Well, here?s the good news for GKIC?

Through months full of multiple problems and decline, culminating in the departure of their CEO and the hiring of a new President, GKIC leadership had stubbornly refused to admit anything was wrong ? and one executive even showed either utter blindness (or amazing denial) of the disaster by stating ?it?s business as usual.?

But that appears to have changed.

Last Friday, I received this communication from that same GKIC executive:

?There is a big mental push on the GKIC ?inside? to get back to the Glory Days. That is straight from Dan (he was in the office meeting all day yesterday) and the whole team is ALL IN.?

Did you catch that? Because it was fairly subtle.

For the first time ever that I?ve heard or seen, a GKIC executive has acknowledged that the company needs to ?get back? to a better time in the past.

HALLELUJAH!

Having Dan Kennedy himself, the world?s #1 small business marketing and growth expert, fly in to spend an entire day meeting with the employees and Board members, and admitting that ?the whole team? needs to ?push? to stop the decline and return to better days, is a sure enough sign for me that GKIC is no longer in ?Denial of Risk and Peril.?

And that means that the company has applied the brakes to its fall, perhaps only moments before it would have tumbled over the Stage 3 cliff and practically straight down into Stage 4.

In fact, such humility is a sure-fire sign that the company has shed its hubris ? which was the first Stage Of Decline.

This is GREAT NEWS for all long-suffering members, employees, affiliates, strategic partners and fans of Dan Kennedy and GKIC!

Sure, they have yet to admit it publicly ? or even just to their members ? but I?ll take anything I can get at this point and conclude that all of GKIC is committed to end its stumbling and bumbling and determined to climb back up to the lofty perch it once occupied in the small business marketing world back in ?the Glory Days.?

After all, when this same GKIC executive angrily asked me ?What would YOU do if YOU ran GKIC?? a few weeks ago (he left off the ?Mr. Bigshot? at the end ? but that was clearly in his tone), that was my exact response:

I told him I would beg Dan Kennedy for his help, pay any amount Dan asked for his consulting and then LISTEN TO and FOLLOW every single word he said.

(I even suggested that the ?pay? part might not be required of GKIC, seeing as how Dan is ?on the payroll? as the remaining co-founder of the company.)

Of course, I don?t know what request, pleading or financial arrangement brought Dan to GKIC?s Chicago headquarters last week.

But if the powers-that-be stop ignoring everything Dan?s ever taught about how to properly run a business, and start following every letter of his advice, I believe the company will reverse its decline and move back towards regaining the respect, admiration and position in the marketing community that it once held (back in ?the Glory Days?).

Will it ever get back to the undisputed leadership position in the marketing community that it once held?

Maybe, and maybe not. That is certainly a VERY tall order.

But this is just as certainly a start in the right direction.

And the first step in the reversal of the oh-so-incredibly-wrong direction in which the company had been headed.

And to that, I?ll say it again:

HALLELUJAH!

What are your thoughts?

I?d love to read your comment below.

Why Wook Author Hugh Howey Didn?t Sell His Ebook Rights | Digital Book World

www.digitalbookworld.com:

Wool author Hugh Howey struck it big in a deal with Simon & Schuster late last year that saw him collect a seven-figure advance for just the print publishing rights to his hit best-seller.

As it turns out, well before his deal with a traditional publisher, he was raking in $150,000 a month in income for his self-published ebooks. It was a tough sell, given those numbers, for any publisher to be able to buy the rights to publish his book.

Canada approves ConAgra Foods? acquisition of Ralcorp for $6.8bn

FBR Staff Writer
Published 15 January 2013

The Canadian Competition Bureau has confirmed that it does not intend to challenge US-based ConAgra Foods? acquisition of Ralcorp for $6.8bn.

This decision by the agency satisfies one of the conditions for the completion of the transaction. However, the deal remains subject to certain other closing conditions, including approval by Ralcorp's shareholders.

The acquisition of Ralcorp by ConAgra Foods will create one of the largest packaged food companies in North America, with annual sales of around $18bn and a combined workforce of more than 36,000.

The deal is in line with ConAgra Foods' Recipe for Growth strategy, which is aimed at expanding the private label segment, strengthening the core business and adjacencies, and international expansion. It will position ConAgra Foods as a leading private label packaged food business in North America, with sales of about $4.5bn.

ConAgra expects the deal to modestly benefit its fiscal 2013 financial results. The transaction is expected to be completed by 31 March 2013.

Ralcorp sells Post branded cereals and a wide variety of private label food products. It also produces ready-to-eat and hot cereal products; nutritional and cereal bars; crackers and cookies; food service, frozen griddle products and biscuits; food service and breads, rolls and muffins.

ConAgra Foods, headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, produces a wide range of food products including cooking oil, frozen dinners, hot cocoa, hot dogs, peanut butter and many others. Its brands include Hunt's, Healthy Choice, Marie Callender's, Slim Jim, Reddi-wip, Egg Beaters, Hebrew National, P.F. Chang's, and Bertolli ready meals.

Race is on for EU's $1.3 billion science projects

(AP) ? Call it Europe's Got Talent for geeks.

Teams of scientists from across the continent are vying for a funding bonanza that could see two of them receive up to ?1 billion ($1.33 billion) over 10 years to keep Europe at the cutting edge of technology.

The contest began with 26 proposals that were whittled down to six last year. Just four have made it to the final round.

They include a plan to develop digital guardian angels that would keep people safe from harm; a massive data-crunching machine to simulate social, economic and technological change on our planet; an effort to craft the most accurate computer model of the human brain to date; and a team working to find better ways to produce and employ graphene ? an ultra-thin material that could revolutionize manufacturing of everything from airplanes to computer chips.

The two winners will be announced by the European Union's executive branch in Brussels on Jan. 28.

Initially, each project will receive ?54 million from the European Union's research budget, an amount that will be matched by national governments and other sources. Further funding will depend on whether they reach certain milestones within the first 30 months, but over a decade it could total ?1 billion each.

Securing such vast sums will be made harder by the austerity measures imposed by many financially drained European governments.

Still, the senior EU official overseeing the so-called Future and Emerging Technologies Flagships program is confident the money will be made available and insists the investment is necessary if Europe wants to match the success the CERN labs on the Swiss-French border that have become the world's premier center for particle research thanks to their $10 billion atom smasher.

"Supporting research and development is not a nice-to-have, it is essential because no investment means no chance for a better future," Neelie Kroes told The Associated Press in an email. "And especially during a crisis we all need something positive to look ahead to. Just cutting public expenditure and austerity don't bring new growth and jobs."

Kroes, whose title is European Commissioner for Digital Agenda, believes it will pay off. "By pooling resources across the EU and focusing on the two best projects we get a good shot at a manifold return on the investment," she said. Switzerland, Norway, Israel and Turkey, which are not part of the 27-nation EU, are also partnering in the program.

One explicit aim of the program is to encourage scientists to address not just contemporary problems but also those that could arise in future.

Climate change, ageing societies and a shortage of natural resources all loom large in predictions for Europe's future. So far, solutions to these problems have been limited, partly because of their sheer scope.

"The world of today has become so complex that it's beyond our control," said Dirk Helbing, a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH in Zurich. Helbing is the coordinator of the FuturICT team that aims to monitor the state of the planet in real time using growing mountains of data now at our fingertips. Anybody will be able to tap into the system to explore possible future scenarios in much the same way as the meteorologists can now forecast the weather with a certain degree of accuracy.

"Think of it as the telescope of the 21st century to help get better insight into problems," Helbing said.

A rival project led by scientists at ETH's sister school EPFL in Lausanne, focuses less on the planetary and more on the personal.

Adrian Ionescu, a professor of nanoneletronics at EPFL, says the booming in mobile devices has concentrated mainly on communication and gaming. His team's Guardian Angels project aims to develop wearable, self-powered gadgets than can warn their users of danger, encourage them to exercise, and collect environmental and health information that could be of use to doctors.

Ionescu claims such devices could save large sums in health care costs by preventing diseases and helping manage them.

The components to make them are already available, he said. The key is integrating them all into one system ? a process he likened to the effort made by the United States in the 1960s to put a man on the moon.

One of the most promising materials for electronic devices of the future is graphene ? the sole focus of a third finalist. It has been touted as a solution to problems as wide-ranging as mopping up nuclear spills, making airplanes more fuel efficient and speeding up computer chips. Russian-born scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov received the 2010 Nobel Prize in physics for their experiments with this two-dimensional "wonder material" that's up to 300 times stronger than steel ? but much lighter.

The problem is how to manufacture it efficiently.

"There is still quite a bit of research to be done," said Jari Kinaret, professor of applied physics at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Kinaret said the long-term funding offered by the EU program would be key to developing what he called a "disruptive technology."

"If you want to create a new technology it does not happen in one or two years," he said. Although Europe, the United States and Asia each produce a third of the scientific papers published on graphene, the number of patents coming out of Europe lags behind.

"We risk that the fruits of research that started in Europe will be harvested elsewhere," he told the AP.

The prospect of Europe losing ground to nimbler rivals plays a prominent role in the arguments put forward by all four projects still in the race.

"If we don't get the funding...we may see some of the European talent move to parts of the world where there is better funding situation, like Singapore," said Kinaret.

Henry Markram said CERN's success was the best example of how polling European resources can put the continent at the forefront of science. CERN announced last year that they have finally found solid evidence of the elusive Higgs boson particle that scientists have been hunting for 50 years.

Markram, a professor of neuroscience at EPFL, says his team wants to do the same for the human brain.

"The pharmaceutical industry won't do this, computing companies won't do this, there's too much fundamental science," he said. "This is one project which absolutely needs public funding."

His Human Brain Project plans to use supercomputers to model the brain and then simulate drugs and treatments for diseases that Markram says cost ?800 billion each year in Europe alone.

Wal-Mart to hire vets, buy American

NEW YORK (AP) ? Why wait on Washington to fix the economy when there's Wal-Mart?

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer and the nation's biggest private employer with 1.4 million workers, said Tuesday that it is rolling out a three-part plan to help jumpstart the sluggish U.S. economy.

The plan includes hiring more than 100,000 veterans in the next five years, spending $50 billion to buy more American-made merchandise in the next 10 years and helping its part-time workers move into full-time positions sooner.

The move comes as Wal-Mart's attempts to rebound from blows to its reputation in recent months from an alleged bribery scandal in Mexico and a deadly fire in November at a Bangladesh factory that supplies clothes to the company. Wal-Mart, which often has been criticized for offering low-paying jobs and not buying more from U.S. manufacturers, said its plan will highlight the career opportunities in the retail industry.

"We've developed a national paralysis that's driven by all of us waiting for someone else to do something," Bill Simon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart's U.S. business, said at an annual retail industry convention in New York on Tuesday morning. "The beauty of the private sector is that we don't have to win an election, convince Congress or pass a bill to do what we think is right. We can simply move forward, doing what we know is right."

At the center of Wal-Mart's plan is its pledge to hire veterans, many of who come from Afghanistan and Iraq are having a particularly hard time finding employment. The unemployment rate for veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan stood at 10.8 percent in December versus the overall unemployment rate of 7.8 percent.

The company said plans to hire every veteran who wants a job and has been honorably discharged in the first 12 months of active duty. The program, which will start on Memorial Day, will include jobs mostly in Wal-Mart's stores or in its Sam's Club locations. Some will be at its headquarters, based in Bentonville, Ark. or the company's distribution centers.

Dave Tovar, a Wal-Mart spokesman, says that the company hasn't worked out the details but it will "match up the veterans' experience and qualifications." Simon, who served in the Navy, said that veterans have "a record of performance under pressure."

"They're quick learners, and they're team players. These are leaders with discipline, training, and a passion for service. There is a seriousness and sense of purpose that the military instills, and we need it today more than ever," he said.

Wal-Mart said First Lady Michelle Obama's team has expressed an interest in working with Wal-Mart and with the rest of the business community. In the next several weeks, Simon said the White House will convene the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense and major U.S. employers to encourage businesses to make commitments to train and employ American's returning veterans.

The first lady, who spearheaded a White House drive to encourage businesses to hire veterans, praised Wal-Mart's announcement on Tuesday, calling it "historic."

"We all believe that no one who serves our country should have to fight for a job once they return home," The first lady said in the statement. "Wal-Mart is setting a groundbreaking example for the private sector to follow."

In addition to hiring veterans, Wal-Mart said that it will buy spend $50 billion to buy products made in the U.S. over the next 10 years. According to data from Wal-Mart's suppliers, items that are made, sourced or grown in the U.S. account for about two-thirds of the company's spending on products for its U.S. business. The company said it plans to focus on buying more in areas such as sporting goods, fashion basics, storage products, games and paper products.

The commitment comes as economics are changing for making goods overseas. Labor costs are rising in Asia, while oil and transportation costs are high and increasingly uncertain.

Simon, Wal-Mart's CEO, said that a few of the company's manufacturers have told Wal-Mart that they have defined the "tipping points" at which manufacturing abroad will no longer make sense for them. Simon cited one supplier called 1888 Mills, which made most of its towels overseas, but had an underutilized factory in Griffin, Georgia.

Wal-Mart said it worked with the supplier on a couple of innovations and now the U.S. factory is hiring again. The towels made in the U.S. will be in 600 of its stores this spring, and another 600 stores in by the fall. The towels' label will say "Made Here."

The final piece of Wal-Mart's plan is to help part-time workers transition into full-time employment if they desire to. Simon said that about 75 percent of its store management start as hourly associates, and their average pay is $50,000 to $170,000 a year.

"There are some fundamental misunderstandings out there about retail jobs, and we need to do better at explaining the opportunities we offer," he said.

Israelis offer a 'Yom Huledet Sameach' to Ben Yehuda, resurrector of Hebrew language

Eliezer Ben Yehuda, who transformed Hebrew from the rusty language of ancient Israel and the Bible into the dynamic, dominant language of modern-day Israel, would be 155 years old today.

By Christa Case Bryant,?Staff Writer / January 8, 2013

This December, 2012 photo shows visitors at the Mahane Yehuda market, one of Jerusalem's free tourist attractions. Beyond its earthly past, Jerusalem has an impossible beauty with broad appeal. For residents and tourists, secular and religious souls, city slickers or nature lovers, there is always an unexplored alleyway, street corner or vista that will show you the city as you?ve never seen it before.

Since I?m a new journalist in Israel who happens to love ice cream and arrived here with only one piece of furniture to my name, that would be grave indeed.

So I for one am grateful for Mr. Ben Yehuda, who was born 155 years ago today in the Russian empire.

Legend has it that the man was not only brilliant, but a little crazy. And you would have to be, if you were planning to try to resurrect an ancient language after roughly 2,000 years and expect it to become the primary spoken language of a country that didn't even exist yet.

But the Sorbonne-educated Ben Yehuda did just that ??well before the state of Israel was founded in 1948, and even before Lord Balfour of Britain made his famous promise to the Zionists in 1917 to help establish a Jewish homeland.

Of course, Hebrew was the language of the Torah ? the biblical books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy ? as well as other religious writings. So many Jews were familiar with it. But they didn?t use it to talk about things like grocery shopping or even politics.

Where to start? With your family, of course. When Ben Yehuda arrived in Israel with his family, he banned his wife and children from speaking any other language. According to tradition, his family was the first to speak exclusively Hebrew in the home.

He also helped start schools and Hebrew-language newspapers, and published the first dictionary of modern Hebrew, often drawing on biblical words to coin modern terms. Ultra-Orthodox Jews pushed back hard, arguing that Hebrew is a holy language and not to be used to discuss the mundane. Many of them still prefer to speak in Yiddish when discussing daily affairs.

But Hebrew is nevertheless the dominant language in Israel today, although Arabic is an official language as well.

But I digress.

You were wondering about how to order ice cream, right?

G'lida. That?s your ticket.

Todah (thank you), Ben Yehuda.
