Microsoft lists 180 countries in Windows Phone 8 Marketplace, says apps can filter by screen size

microsoft-180-countries-in-windows-phone-8-marketplace

Now that the dust has settled on the big Windows Phone 8 hoedown, Redmond is filling in the details of all its announcements. To wit, it just released a list of the 180 countries that will get access to its WP marketplace and developer app hub. That number is a big jump from the 63 markets and 38 app hubs of today, and with in-app purchasing coming soon, Microsoft emphasized that point -- along with the 100,000 apps in stock -- to developers. The software giant also added that the marketplace will filter apps by phone screen resolution and "other key characterstics," allowing easier targeting of users. To see if your country made the cut, check the source for the very long list.

Kate Middleton Hats Fetch Big Bucks at Auction

Two hats worn by Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton before her marriage to Britain's Prince William were recently sold at auction for fairly big bucks.

One, which she wore to a wedding in October 2010, went for the equivalent of $5,080 and the other for $5,030. Not a small amount for an accessory.

Interestingly, both of the hats were rented ... who rents hats? Apparently if you're the UK's most fashionable young woman, it's par for the course.

Given that Prince Charles reportedly picks up the tab for all work-related Kate Middleton wardrobe costs, she can afford to rent the best of the best, too.

The two hats were part of the 'Passion for Fashion' auction held by Kerry Taylor, the same auction house which sold a dress of hers for £78,000 last year.

Now that she's married to William, auction houses are unable to put any items of the Duchess' clothes up for sale unless she sanctions a charity auction.

Exxon's CEO: Climate, energy fears overblown

NEW YORK (AP) ? ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson says fears about climate change, drilling, and energy dependence are overblown.

In a speech Wednesday, Tillerson acknowledged that burning of fossil fuels is warming the planet, but said society will be able to adapt. The risks of oil and gas drilling are well understood and can be mitigated, he said. And dependence on other nations for oil is not a concern as long as access to supply is certain, he said.

Tillerson blamed a public that is "illiterate" in science and math, a "lazy" press, and advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" for energy misconceptions in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations.

He highlighted that huge discoveries of oil and gas in North America have reversed a 20-year decline in U.S. oil production in recent years. He also trumpeted the global oil industry's ability to deliver fuels during a two-year period of dramatic uncertainty in the Middle East, the world's most important oil and gas-producing region.

"No one, anywhere, any place in the world has not been able to get crude oil to fuel their economies," he said.

In his speech and during a question-and-answer session after, he addressed three major energy issues: Climate change, oil and gas drilling pollution, and energy dependence.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Tillerson, in a break with predecessor Lee Raymond, has acknowledged that global temperatures are rising. "Clearly there is going to be an impact," he said Wednesday.

But he questioned the ability of climate models to predict the magnitude of the impact. He said that people would be able to adapt to rising sea levels and changing climates that may force agricultural production to shift.

"We have spent our entire existence adapting. We'll adapt," he said. "It's an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution."

Andrew Weaver, chairman of climate modeling and analysis at the University of Victoria in Canada, disagreed with Tillerson's characterization of climate modeling. He said modeling can give a very good sense of the type of climate changes that are likely. And he said adapting to those changes will be much more difficult and disruptive than Tillerson seems to be acknowledging.

Steve Coll, author of the recent book "Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power," said he was surprised Exxon would already be talking about ways society could adapt to climate change when there is still time to try to avoid its worst effects. Also, he said, research suggests that adapting to climate change could be far more expensive than reducing emissions now. "Moving entire cities would be very expensive," he said.

Legislation or regulation that would help slow the emissions of global warming gases would likely lead to lower demand for oil and gasoline, and could reduce Exxon's profit.

DRILLING

Tillerson expressed frustration at the level of public concern over new drilling techniques that tap natural gas and oil in shale formations under several states. He said environmental advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" have alarmed a public that doesn't understand drilling practices ? or math, science or engineering in general. He blamed "lazy" journalists for producing stories that scare the public but don't investigate the claims of advocacy groups.

Drilling for oil and gas will always involve risks of spills and accidents, he said. But those risks are manageable and worth taking because they are small given the amount of energy they produce.

Drilling in shale formations, he said, only poses a small risk to those living nearby. It is neither life threatening nor long lasting and can be controlled in the event of an accident.

Drillers force millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and some hazardous chemicals into shale formations. The technique breaks up rock and creates escape routes for oil and gas. If the drilling wastewater is not treated properly or if it seeps through cracked drilling pipes, it could contaminate drinking water.

The industry's biggest challenge, he said, is "taking an illiterate public and try to help them understand why we can manage these risks."

ENERGY SECURITY

Tillerson made a distinction between energy security and energy dependence. He said that energy security ? making sure that the economy has access to energy ? is crucial.

But he said access to energy is not in peril. "Some of the fears around energy security are not well founded," he said.

The quest for energy independence, though, is misguided, he said. It doesn't matter where the U.S. gets oil because crude is priced globally. Even if the U.S. used only oil from North America, a disruption in the Middle East would increase global prices, hurt the U.S. and global economies, and force Americans to pay more at the pump.

Even if the U.S. no longer needed Middle Eastern oil, it would likely want to play a major role in helping maintain the region's security, Tillerson said.

Without Desktop Virtualization, You Can't Attain True Business ...

Even if you?ve invested on virtualization, off-site backup, redundancy, data replication, and other related technologies, I?m willing to bet your BC/DR program still lacks an important ingredient. I bet you?ve forgotten about your end users and their desktops.

Picture this. A major disaster strikes your city and brings your entire main site down. No problem. You?ve got all your data backed up on another site. You just need to connect to it and voila! you?ll be back up and running in no time.

Really?

Do you have PCs ready for your employees to use? Do those machines already have the necessary applications for working on your data? If you still have to install them, then that?s going to take a lot of precious time. When your users get a hold of those machines, will they be facing exactly the same interface that they?ve been used to?

If not, more time will be wasted as they try to familiarize themselves. By the time you?re able to declare ?business as usual?, you?ll have lost customer confidence (or even customers themselves), missed business opportunities, and dropped potential earnings.

That?s not going to happen with desktop virtualization.

Virtualization in general is a vital component in modern Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery strategies. For instance, by creating multiple copies of virtualized disks and implementing disk redundancy, your operations can continue even if a disk breaks down. Better yet, if you put copies on separate physical servers, then you can likewise continue even if a physical server breaks down.

You can take an even greater step by placing copies of those disks on an entirely separate geographical location so that if a disaster brings your entire main site down, you can still gain access to your data from the other site.

Because you?re essentially just dealing with files and not physical hardware, virtualization makes the implementation of redundancy less costly, less tedious, greener, and more effective.

But virtualization, when used for BC/DR, is mostly focused on the server side. As we?ve pointed out earlier in the article, server side BC/DR efforts are not enough. A significant share of business operations are also dependent on the client side.

Desktop virtualization (DV) is very similar to server virtualization. It comes with nearly the same kind of benefits too. That means, a virtualized desktop can be copied just like ordinary files. If you have a copy of a desktop, then you can easily use that if the active copy is destroyed.

In fact, if the PC on which the desktop is running becomes incapacitated, you can simply move to another machine, stream or install a copy of the virtualized desktop there, and get back into the action right away. If all your PCs are incapacitated after a disaster, rapid provisioning of your desktops will keep customers and stakeholders from waiting.

In addition to that, DV will enable your user interface to look like the one you had on your previous PC. This particular feature is actually very important to end users. You see, users normally have their own way of organizing things on their desktops. The moment you put them in front of a desktop not their own, even if it has the same OS and the same set of applications, they?ll feel disoriented and won?t be able to perform optimally.

Greece expected to name new finance minister

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's coalition government is expected to name a new finance minister, after the banker appointed to the post resigned for health reasons.

A replacement for Vassilis Rapanos, was expected to be named Tuesday, a day after he said his health would not allow him to fulfill his duties as minister. Rapanos had been named to the post last week but was taken ill and rushed to hospital Friday before being sworn in. Outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias still holds the title.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, himself recovering at home after a two-day hospital stay for serious eye surgery, was to discuss the issue with the heads of the other parties that comprise the three-party coalition government: the socialist PASOK party leader Evangelos Venizelos and Democratic Left head Fotis Kouvelis.

Saudis to permit women to compete in Olympics

(AP) ? A month before the London Games, Saudi Arabia appears to be moving closer to sending female athletes to the Olympics for the first time amid mounting pressure on the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom to grant women more rights.

Deliberations by Saudi officials on sending women to the games have been wrapped in secrecy for fear of a backlash from the powerful religious establishment within a deeply traditional society, in which women are severely restricted in public life and are not even allowed to drive.

Saudi Arabia is one of three countries that have never included women in their Olympic teams, along with Qatar and Brunei. The International Olympic Committee said talks have been ongoing with Saudi Arabia to ensure participation and a statement by the country's embassy in London said female athletes, who qualify, could be allowed to participate.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is looking forward to its complete participation in the London 2012 Olympic Games through the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, which will oversee the participation of women athletes who can qualify for the games," the statement said.

Human Rights Watch said the announcement is "an important step forward," but the New York-based group cautioned that gender discrimination in the country remains "institutional and entrenched."

"It is only right that the Saudi government should play by the Olympic rules," Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch, said. "But an 11th-hour change of course to avoid a ban does not alter the dismal and unequal conditions for women and girls in Saudi Arabia."

There are no written laws that ban or restrict women from participating in sport in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest shrines. The stigma of female athletes is rooted in conservative traditions and religious views which hold that giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sin.

Saudi officials have been sending mixed signals for months. While some said that they had been working on an arrangement with the IOC, top sports officials in the kingdom were adamant in publicly denying the possibility of female athletes competing at the Olympics.

Saudi Olympic Committee president Prince Nawaf said in April that female participation had not been approved by the country's leaders and that Saudi-based women traveling to London would be contrary to the country's traditions and norms.

Nawaf left open the possibility of Saudi women who are studying abroad being able to compete outside of the team as independent athletes. However, that option was quashed after pressure from human rights groups and the IOC.

On Monday, a Saudi official said an announcement by King Abdullah about Saudi women's participation in the Olympics was expected some days ago, but was postponed after the death of Crown Prince Nayef.

King Abdullah has taken modest steps to reform and modernize the oil-rich nation since he ascended the throne in 2005. He has faced staunch opposition from the hardline members of the royal family on each proposal he's made toward easing restrictions on women.

Saudi women bear the brunt of their nation's deeply conservative values. They are often the target of unwanted attention from the kingdom's religious police, who enforce a rigid interpretation of Islamic Shariah law on the streets and public places like shopping malls and university campuses.

Women do participate in sports in the kingdom, including clandestine soccer and basketball leagues. There are no national competitions, however, that would allow Saudi women to compete in order to qualify for international events.

If the Saudis do send women to the games, then female athletes in judo and in track and field are considered possibilities for the games, sports officials familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press while speaking on condition of anonymity.

Because Saudi women may not meet the international qualifying standards, the IOC may grant them Olympic entry based on "special circumstances," an IOC official told the AP in March, adding that the IOC has insisted on more than one woman on the Saudi team, and hopes for at least two or three.

Saudi officials have repeatedly hinted they'd allow equestrian Dalma Rushdi Malhas, who won a bronze medal in showjumping at the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore, to compete at the London Games. But the International Equestrian Federation said Monday the 20-year-old athlete will not be competing at the Olympics because she has failed to achieve "the minimum eligibility standard required for the Olympic Games" by June 17.

Malhas' horse was sidelined by injury and missed a month's work during the qualifying period, the federation said in a statement.

IOC President Jacques Rogge has said he is "optimistic" that Saudi Arabia will send women athletes, but last month said any deal was far from complete. Describing talks with Saudi Arabia as "not an easy situation," Rogge said discussions were under way with Saudi Olympic authorities and with athletes themselves.

Qatar and Brunei are expected to include women, according to the IOC. If some arrangement can be made for the Saudis, all national Olympic committees in London would include women athletes for the first time in Olympic history.

About 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in London, representing more than 200 national Olympic committees.

Facebook stock has highest close since May 21

NEW YORK (AP) -- Facebook closes at one of its highest prices since its initial public offering.

The stock rose $1.21, or 3.8 percent, to finish Friday at $33.05. It hasn't closed above that price since May 21, the second day of trading.

The stock finished the week up 10 percent, the second straight week of increase.

Facebook is still 14 percent below its IPO price of $38 a share.

Facebook's IPO has had a rocky ride. Its debut was delayed by trading glitches on the Nasdaq.

Investors have been concerned about its ability to increase revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience, though many analysts hold positive long-term opinions.

Facebook, along with investment banks that led the IPO, is the subject of dozens of shareholder lawsuits.

Red Wine And Black Tea Bioactives Fight Skin Cancer | PaleoPharm

Skin cancer is now the most prevalent form of cancer. It is so pervasive that it is not usually included in the national cancer statistics that list ?high-profile? cancers of the breast, colon, lung, and prostate. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is notoriously chemo-resistant and radio-resistant and there are no known cures for invasive melanoma. Regrettably, the standard-of-care treatments used today provide only meager survival times.

Consider?able evidence from laboratory studies suggests that a combination of nutraceuticals could provide protection against melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. New evidence also suggests that certain nutraceutical combinations can cause melanoma cells to self destruct (apoptosis), at least in laboratory studies.

The precedent for this approach?using two or more natural bioactive compounds to achieve synergistic effects on gene expression in tumor cells?is supported by a number of recent studies:

  • Researchers have shown that a using a combination of two widely available natural compounds, curcumin (the bioactive in the spice, turmeric), and green tea catechins, can prevent chemically induced colon carcinogenesis rat model more effectively than either of the compounds alone.
  • In one study, a combination of genistein and selenium significantly inhibited growth of prostate cancer cells in a dose-and time-dependent manner by decreasing gene expression for matrix metalloproteins-2 levels, which are known to promote tumor cell proliferation, migration, and adhesion.
  • Recently, researchers examined the effects of resveratrol, the well-known red wine polyphenol and black tea theaflavins, two widely consumed food components that have been frequently cited to protect humans from skin carcinogenesis. Study results showed that the synergistic effect of resveratrol and black tea theaflavins leads to enhanced tumor cell death. Both of these compounds are known to repair DNA damage, which probably accounts for the synergistic effect.

Studies suggest that resveratrol and black tea theaflavins can work together to intervene at all stages of cancer stages through different signaling pathways to prevent tumor cell formation, growth, proliferation, and invasiveness. Resveratrol and black tea theaflavins?even at low doses?act together to inhibit established skin tumor growth more than either compound alone. This synergy is most likely? attributable to a reduction in tumor suppressor protein p53 together with an inhibition of MAPK signaling and induction of apoptotic cell death.

No Spin Zone: Preclinical studies suggest that red wine + black tea consumption (or use of bioactive components in these beverages) as well as bioactive compounds in garlic, pomegranate, and turmeric can favorably affect the structure and function of genes and cell signaling components that affect skin cancer formation and may favorably influence the expression of genes that can inhibit melanoma at any stage as well as induce apoptosis in the tumor cells.

Turkey takes jet downing to NATO, Syria tension soars

NATO said on Sunday it will discuss Turkey's accusation that Syria shot down one of its warplanes in international airspace, as Damascus suffered heavy casualties and violence scaled new heights.

Syria's surging bloodshed saw at least 72 people killed, a bulk of them soldiers in fighting with rebels, activists said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu warned Ankara's southern neighbour not to challenge Turkey's military.

And Britain, another member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, offered support for "robust" international action.

Davutoglu told Turkey's TRT television that, "according to our conclusions, our plane was shot down in international airspace, 13 nautical miles from Syria."

Damascus did not issue a warning before shooting down the plane, which was on an unarmed training mission to carry out a radar system test, Turkey said.

"The Syrians knew full well that it was a Turkish military plane and the nature of its mission," he said. "Nobody should dare put Turkey's (military) capabilities to the test."

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lashed out at Syria for the "brazen and unacceptable" downing of the Turkish jet and vowed to work with Ankara on a suitable response.

"It is yet another reflection of the Syrian authorities' callous disregard for international norms, human life, and peace and security," Clinton said in a statement.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said President Bashar al-Assad's regime "should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behaviour."

Italy, another NATO member, also condemned the regime for the shooting incident. "This is ... extremely serious and unacceptable," Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said.

He added that Rome voiced its "strong indignation and condemnation" and that Italy would "actively participate" in the NATO meeting, which is to be held on Tuesday.

A NATO spokeswoman said that, "under Article 4, any ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened."

Damascus said it downed the F-4 Phantom on Friday after it violated Syrian airspace.

"Syria was merely exercising its right and sovereign duty and defence," Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi was quoted as saying on Sunday in Al-Watan, a pro-government daily.

"There is no enmity between Syria and Turkey, but political tension (exists) between the two countries.

"What happened was an accident and not an assault as some like to say, because the plane was shot while it was in Syrian airspace and flew over Syrian territorial waters," Makdissi said.

Turkey acknowledged on Saturday that the plane may have done so, in comments seen as a bid to cool tensions between the former allies, but it now appears to have taken a harder stance.

CNN-Turk television reported that search and rescue teams have located the wreckage of the jet at a depth of 1,300 metres (4,265 feet) in the sea, but did not give its precise location or refer to the fate of the two missing pilots.

Ankara said it could not confirm the report.

"We will bring this affair before public opinion and international law in the name of Turkey's honour," Davutoglu said.

Turkish-Syrian relations have already been strained by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's outspoken condemnation of the Assad's regime's bloody crackdown, which rights activists say has killed more than 15,000 people since March 2011.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon expressed his "deep concern" about the incident, particularly about the "potential serious implications" for the region, spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

In a telephone call with Davutoglu, the UN chief "commended Turkey for the restraint shown in its initial reaction and appreciated Turkey and Syria for conducting a joint search operation."

At least 72 people were killed on Sunday in Syria, including 36 civilians, 27 soldiers and nine rebels, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

At least 16 soldiers were killed in the northern province of Aleppo, while the rest died in neighbouring Idlib province and in the provinces of Damascus and Deir Ezzor in the east, the watchdog said.

The Observatory reported that following an attack on an artillery battalion in Aleppo, a number of soldiers defected, taking with them a large quantity of weapons.

The official SANA news agency reported that regime troops "were engaged in combat against a terrorist group that attacked people in the Jabaliye neighbourhood of Deir Ezzor killing scores of terrorists."

Syrian government uses the term "terrorists" to describe the rebels.

In another setback for the regime, rebels captured 11 government soldiers in the central province of Damascus, it added.

"This is one of the bloodiest weeks in the conflict," Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory, said.

The Observatory also reported that rebels had shot down a Syrian regime helicopter near the Jordanian border.

According to Observatory figures, 94 people were killed in Syria last Monday, 62 on Tuesday, 88 on Wednesday, 168 on Thursday, 116 on Friday and 116 more on Saturday.

"It's like we are in a war," Abdel Rahman said. "Sometimes when two countries are at war, not even 20 people are killed a day. But now in Syria it has become normal to have 100 killed each day."

A Russian ship that tried to deliver attack helicopters to Syria entered the northern port of Murmansk on Sunday after being forced to turn back when news of its mission was leaked.

An unnamed Russian diplomat said the ship, the Alaed, would soon try again to make the highly controversial delivery under the Russian flag.

The switch appears to be an attempt to avoid security inspections that come when sailing under the flag of a third country.

The Alaed was forced to turn back after its mission was initially mentioned by the US State Department and then reported in the British press. Those reports prompted the ship's British insurer to withdraw coverage.

Roof partly caves in at Canada mall, prompting evacuation; witness says cars fell through

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario - A roof has partially collapsed at a busy mall in Canada, prompting an evacuation and a search for anyone who might have been injured.

A portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled Saturday afternoon, exposing metal and concrete supports at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake. The center had been bustling with weekend shoppers.

Joe Drazil, a Zellers store employee, says a few cars appear to have fallen through the gaping hole near escalators. He says everybody was cleared from the mall.

The collapse also triggered a gas leak and prompted emergency officials to shut off the mall's power.

Provincial police say they can't confirm whether anyone is hurt or missing.

Mayor Rick Hamilton has declared a state of emergency.

Angels erase 5-run deficit to beat Dodgers

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:55 a.m. ET June 23, 2012

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Rookie sensation Mike Trout has given the Los Angeles Angels everything they could have asked from a 20-year-old phenom - and more.

Trout hit a go-ahead homer and scored from first base on a single as the Angels rallied from an early five-run deficit against Chad Billingsley to beat the Dodgers 8-5 Friday night in the opener of the season's second Freeway Series.

"I wouldn't say we've come to expect it, but I'm definitely not surprised by it, personally," teammate Mark Trumbo said. "He's the total package. I've never seen anything like it. I've never played with anybody who's anywhere near as advanced as he is at this age. He's a big part of the reason why we've been playing a lot better."

Dan Haren (5-7) allowed five runs, nine hits and three walks over five innings with five strikeouts. Ernesto Frieri, the fifth Angels pitcher, worked a hitless ninth for his eighth save in eight chances.

"I left some balls up and out over the plate, and there's just no excuse for it," Haren said. "I've done it a couple of times now, and I've got to get better than that. Obviously, I think everyone knows I can throw the ball better than I have. But it was nice for the team to pick me up, and hopefully I can pick them up next time."

Bobby Abreu hit a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw in his return to Angel Stadium with the Dodgers. But it wasn't enough for Billingsley (4-6), who gave up six runs and 10 hits in five innings.

The right-hander is 1-5 with a 5.36 ERA in seven career starts against the Angels, who had hit only two homers off him in 42 1-3 career innings prior to Trout's clout. This was the fourth time in the last five regular-season meetings between the Dodgers and Angels that the game turned on a tiebreaking home run.

The Dodgers totaled four runs over their previous four games, including a three-game sweep by Oakland. But Abreu gave Billingsley a great head start in the first inning with a towering drive far back into the elevated seats in right field after singles by Jerry Hairston Jr. and Andre Ethier.

The emergence of Trout, Trumbo (26) and Peter Bourjos (25) made the Angels' outfield too crowded for the 38-year-old Abreu to play a regular role, despite Vernon Wells' long-term thumb injury. He was released on April 30, and the Dodgers signed him as a free agent four days later. Since then, he is hitting .297 with 13 RBIs in 41 games. But his slow home run trot wasn't aimed at the Angels.

"Not really. It's nothing personal," Abreu said. "To me it was just another team that we face and another team that we have to beat. I was just happy to hit a homer right there. It felt good that I did something to help the team and give us a few runs in the first inning."

The Dodgers extended the margin to 5-0 in the second with RBI singles from Hairston and Juan Rivera. But Billingsley couldn't hold it, and the Angels fought back with three runs in the bottom half on Alberto Callaspo's RBI double, Howie Kendrick's sacrifice fly and Erick Aybar's RBI groundout.

"I think our recent success has given us more confidence to come back," Trumbo said. "I mean, when you're down early like that, it's not the end of the world. There are still nine chances to come back and get the job done. It was fortunate that we were able to answer them quickly and get some of the momentum back on our side."

Callaspo led off the fourth with a single and scored on Aybar's triple. Bobby Wilson followed with a suicide squeeze that eventually scored Aybar, who slid past the plate while catcher A.J. Ellis missed the tag. Umpire Dale Scott remained an interested spectator until Aybar casually walked back and stepped on the dish, then gave the "safe" sign.

Trout, who entered second in the AL with a .338 average, drove Billingsley's next pitch to left-center for his seventh homer and a 6-5 Angels lead.

"I was just trying to be aggressive," Trout said. "I got a pitch I could hit and I put a good swing on it. We were all having big at-bats. Bobby coming up with that squeeze was big, and Aybar getting that triple. Dan had a rough first two innings, but after that he settled in and gave us a chance. So getting those runs for him was big."

It could have been worse for Billingsley, but Ethier displayed his Gold Glove form in the fifth by robbing Kendrick of a two-run double with a leaping catch against the 18-foot wall for the third out. Torii Hunter drove in the Angels' final two runs against Jamey Wright, with Trout winging it all the way from first behind Wilson after Hunter singled to right field on a 3-2 pitch with two outs.

"Trout is like my little brother. He's my best friend, so I'm really excited that he did that for me - giving me that extra RBI - and I'm going to take him to McDonald's," Hunter said.

NOTES: Billingsley hasn't gone longer than seven innings since his season debut, when he allowed three hits over 8 1-3 innings in a 6-0 win at San Diego. He has completed seven innings in only three of his 14 starts since then. ... Haren walked more than two batters for only the second time in his last 39 starts - including May 14 against Oakland, when he issued four and hit his only batter of the season in a 5-0 loss. Last year, he finished with fewer walks (33) than starts (34). ... Only two of Abreu's last 28 home runs have come with more than one runner on base. The other was a tying, three-run shot off Clayton Kershaw in the Angels' 6-3 win over the Dodgers on June 22, 2010, at Anaheim.

'Peter Pan' Balotelli cool before England match

By ANDREW DAMPF

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:35 p.m. ET June 23, 2012

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -While Mario Balotelli likened himself to Peter Pan off the pitch, Italy's often volatile striker showed surprising focus in pure football terms before Sunday's showdown with a familiar England squad.

The 21-year-old forward met the media on Saturday for the first time at the European Championship and revealed how much "fun" it's going to be facing three of his Manchester City teammates in the quarterfinals - England goalkeeper Joe Hart, center back Joleon Lescott and midfielder James Milner.

"They know me and I know them," Balotelli said. "I just hope we win. Even though they're my teammates, I hope they're going to lose."

Balotelli has been the center of discussion at Italy's camp ever since the squad arrived in Poland.

In the team's opener against Spain, he wasted a wonderful scoring opportunity by inexplicably slowing down just enough for defender Sergio Ramos to catch up with him and strip him of the ball.

Then, after losing his starting spot in the final Group C match against Ireland, he came off the bench and scored one of the most spectacular goals of the tournament - an acrobatic, midair bicycle kick on the volley.

"There's always going to be criticism. It's normal when you play 60, 70 or 90 minutes that a player is going to make mistakes," Balotelli said. "Criticism helps you improve."

But after scoring against the Irish, defender Leonardo Bonucci rushed over and used his hand to cover Balotelli's mouth, apparently fearful that the striker was unleashing a verbal assault on anyone and everybody.

"We keep saying how young he is, but he's really a (young) man now," midfielder Daniele De Rossi said recently, while his agent Mino Raiola compared him to Peter Pan, the mischievous boy character who can fly and who never ages.

So which label does Balotelli prefer?

"Those are metaphors for Mario the person, not Mario the player, so it's not really suited for the match tomorrow," Balotelli said. "I think Mario is a man. But I am a bit of a Peter Pan, because I'm free. But I definitely feel more of a man than Peter Pan."

In effect, Balotelli's childlike spirit is never far from the surface, such as when he played with the corner flag between his legs in training earlier this week, or with constant practical jokes involving his strike partner, Antonio Cassano.

But Balotelli also appreciates his fans. When scores of schoolchildren came out onto the pitch asking for autographs two days ago, he stayed out satisfying the kids' demands longer than any other player.

Milner discussed the two sides to Balotelli - the one that sometimes appears he has his mind elsewhere, and the other who often plays brilliantly, having helped City to its first Premier League title in 44 years last month.

"He's lucky, he knows two of me," Balotelli said, smiling and looking relaxed with his arms resting on the table in front of him.

But which Balotelli will show up against England?

"I'm going to give my all, then it's up to you to enjoy it or be angered by it," Balotelli said. "Mario the person doesn't need to show anything to anyone. Those that know me know what I'm about."

Still, Balotelli remains a mystery to many fans. He usually doesn't celebrate after scoring, and wasn't about to contemplate how he might react if he finds the target against England.

"First, let me score, then we'll see," he said. "The national-team jersey has been something special to me since I was a kid, but that hasn't affected me here. I haven't had any problems - neither off the pitch nor when I scored."

UK pins the slow move to LTE on carriers, Australia targets auctions for April 2013

Everything Everywhere

Aussies and Brits have been waiting awhile for either a truly broad LTE launch or to get any LTE at all. That wait is coming to an end, but not without some grousing. UK Minister for Culture Ed Vaizey has alleged that any slow movement stemmed from carriers that have "threatened to sue" regulator Ofcom if it's too hasty and does something they frown upon. Needless to say, that remark has ruffled a few feathers: one of the earliest expected British LTE providers, Everything Everywhere, tells Pocket-lint it has "no appetite" to take Ofcom to court and drag 4G deployments through the mud. Things are going a little more smoothly in Australia, if on a later timetable. The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, now expects Australia to auction off 700MHz and 2.5GHz wireless frequencies in April 2013. That could lead to a very long wait for wider 4G service in the country, but at least the 700MHz support will be good news for device makers that don't want to be mired in disputes over LTE devices they've brought over from the US.
