Union protests miss the point on economy

The latest batch of trade union protests in Belfast are divisive, futile and based on a flawed analysis of the economy (News, October 22).

Everyone recognises that it's a difficult time as regards the economy and that people are finding it tough.

However, these protests offer nothing - no hope, no realism, nothing constructive whatsoever - just a dogmatic insistence that, no matter how high the deficit, the solution is to waste more money.

Let's remember that, while joblessness in Northern Ireland is going up, in the rest of the UK the total number of people in work is at its highest level ever.

If we had an Executive which made creating employment its top priority and which understood the conditions companies need to make jobs, Northern Ireland would be performing much, much better.

Out of 250,000 union members, 1,000 people attended the ICTU march in Belfast at the weekend. That says it all.

The unions should concentrate on representing their members properly, rather than denying the deficit and trumpeting a flawed political ideology, which few share.

Poll: Romney erases Obama edge with women

WASHINGTON (AP) ? What gender gap?

Less than two weeks out from Election Day, Republican Mitt Romney has erased President Barack Obama's 16-point advantage among women, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows. And the president, in turn, has largely eliminated Romney's edge among men.

Those churning gender dynamics leave the presidential race still a virtual dead heat, with Romney favored by 47 percent of likely voters and Obama by 45 percent, a result within the poll's margin of sampling error, the survey shows.

After a commanding first debate performance and a generally good month, Romney has gained ground with Americans on a number of important fronts, including their confidence in how he would handle the economy and their impressions of his ability to understand their problems.

At the same time, expectations that Obama will be re-elected have slipped: Half of voters now expect the president to win a second term, down from 55 percent a month earlier.

For all of the good news for Republicans, however, what matters most in the election endgame is Romney's standing in the handful of states whose electoral votes still are up for grabs. And polls in a number of those battleground states still appear to favor Obama.

As the election nears, Romney has been playing down social issues and trying to project a more moderate stance on matters such as abortion in an effort to court female voters. The AP-GfK poll, taken Friday through Tuesday, shows Romney pulling even with Obama among women at 47-47 after lagging by 16 points a month earlier.

But now his campaign is grappling with the fallout from a comment by a Romney-endorsed Senate candidate in Indiana, who said that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended."

Romney quickly distanced himself from the remark by Republican Richard Mourdock. But Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the incident was "a reminder that a Republican Congress working with a Republican President Mitt Romney would feel that women should not be able to make choices about their own health care."

A renewed focus on social issues would be an unwelcome development for Romney: Among female likely voters, 55 percent say Obama would make the right decisions on women's issues, compared with 41 percent who think Romney would.

Romney's pitch to women has been focused squarely on the economy, making the case that what women want most is to ensure their families and their country are on a solid financial footing. The poll shows that message appears to be taking root.

A month ago, women favored Obama over Romney on the economy 56 percent to 40 percent. Now, the split has shifted to 49 percent for Romney and 45 percent for Obama.

Similarly, Obama's lead among women as the candidate who better understands the people's problems has narrowed considerably, from a 58-36 Obama advantage last month to a 50-43 Obama edge now.

Monica Jensen, a 55-year-old independent from Mobile, Ala., says she voted for Obama in 2008 but will shift her vote to Romney this time, largely because of the economy.

"I'm ready for a change," she said. "I want to see the economy go in a different direction."

Ginny Lewis, a Democrat and 72-year-old retired district attorney from Princeton, Ky., says she'll vote for Romney because "I'm tired of the Republicans blaming all the debt on Democrats, so let them take over and see what they do."

Not that she's optimistic about how that will turn out, though. "I think things will get worse before they get better," she said.

Lindsey Hornbaker, a 25-year-old graduate student and nanny, hasn't been swayed by Romney's charm offensive.

Hornbaker, interviewed Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa, where she was attending an Obama rally, said Romney can tweak his tone but not what she sees as a record focused far more on top income earners and out of touch with most working families.

"I heard him go out of his way to sound so moderate during the debate," she said. "And I thought: 'Who is this? Where did this come from?' He may sound like he's focused on the middle class. But where's the record?"

Obama, meanwhile, has been working to shore up his support among men, who tend to be more Republican than women. In the 2008 election, men broke 49 percent for Obama to 48 percent for John McCain, even though Obama got 53 percent of the vote overall. The president's job approval ratings among men have tended to fall below his ratings among women throughout his first term.

A month ago, Romney's advantage among men was 13 percentage points. Now, it's down to 5 points, with most of the shift toward Obama coming among unmarried men.

Obama's election chances hinge on turning out voters like Jon Gerton, a disabled construction worker from Jonesboro, Ark. Gerton's a staunch Obama supporter ? but he didn't vote in 2008.

"It takes longer than four years to get things to the point where things are going better," Gerton said. "Four years, it's not very long."

There has been a gender gap in every presidential election since 1980. In 2008, women were 7 percentage points more likely than men to vote for Obama.

Overall, people are significantly more optimistic about the economy and unemployment in the coming year than they have been at any point in AP-GfK polling going back to March 2011, when the poll first started asking those questions. And likely voters are even more optimistic than other adults.

Nearly six in 10 likely voters think the economy will improve in the next year, up from 46 percent last month. And 42 percent think the number of unemployed Americans will drop in the next year, up from 32 percent in September.

Count Chrysta Walker, of Cedar Lake, Ind., among the voters who are sticking with Obama because they think he's got the right solutions for the fragile economy.

"He's got the middle class at heart," says the 58-year-old Walker. On the economy, she says, Obama "did as well as could be expected because he didn't get a lot of cooperation."

David Bierwirth, who owns an autograph sales business in Las Vegas, turned out at a Romney rally in Henderson this week to show his support for the GOP nominee. To Bierwirth, his vote for Romney is all about the economy.

"I want people back to work," he says, "because then they will buy my products."

The Associated Press-GfK poll was conducted Oct. 19-23 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,186 adults nationwide, including 839 likely voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; for likely voters it is 4.2 points.

Rate the moderator: How did Bob Schieffer do?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Bob Schieffer took a light hand Monday as moderator of the final presidential debate, ending with advice from his mother: "Go vote. It makes you feel big and strong."

Schieffer generally kept his questions to President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney direct, touching on the Middle East, China, the war in Afghanistan and the threat of a nuclear Iran in a debate scheduled to focus on international issues.

At one point he told the two men, "Let me get back to foreign policy" when the subject veered into a squabble on education reform, cutting Romney off as he tried to prolong the topic.

It was the third presidential debate, with PBS' Jim Lehrer and CNN's Candy Crowley moderating the first two. ABC's Martha Raddatz was in control of the debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Republican Paul Ryan. With social media allowing millions of viewers an instant opportunity to be critics, the role of moderator was heavily scrutinized.

Schieffer, the host of CBS's "Face the Nation," gave the two men wide latitude to carry the conversation, even when they tried to talk over one another.

How that played out in the public depended on the taste of the viewer, as seen by two messages that popped up back-to-back on Twitter: "Little known fact. Moderator Bob Schieffer left the room 18 minutes ago," one wag wrote.

But it was followed quickly by another person who thought Schieffer "did a pretty good job of asking mostly decent questions and then getting out of the way. Debate's not about him."

Schieffer's competitor, NBC's "Meet the Press" host David Gregory, tweeted a "tip of the cap" to Schieffer. "Very well done," he said.

Schieffer asked the two men, "What is America's role in the world?" and asked Romney what he felt about the drone strikes that have been the hallmark of Obama's fight against terrorists. He asked whether each candidate would consider an attack on Israel to be an attack on the United States.

When Schieffer asked what each candidate would do if he got a phone call saying Israel was on its way to attack Iran, Romney batted it down as too hypothetical, and Obama didn't address it. Similarly, neither man bit on another hypothetical question of what he would do if Afghanistan forces proved unable to handle the country's security at the time the United States was looking to leave in 2014.

Schieffer segued from another Romney talk about education into the debate's wrap-up statements with a line that quickly drew social media attention: "I think we all love teachers."

Schieffer, who was moderating his third presidential debate, did have one gaffe, referring to the former al-Qaida head as "Obama's bin Laden."

In a sign of his evenhandedness, Schieffer escaped widespread social media criticism suggesting he was leaning any way politically. Earlier Monday, the conservative Media Research Center warned it would be watching him closely, noting it had documented several times when Schieffer supposedly leaned left.

But after the debate, MRC founder Brent Bozell said: "Schieffer managed to moderate this debate without revealing his own positions. Well done."

Change is Best when it Evolves :: Lean Sales and Marketing thru ...

I?ve realized that I want to focus my own business a lot more on ?How can we help you manage change?? rather than ?How can we deliver you a new process solution?? because I often feel the existing process probably isn?t that broken. Understanding how to tweak around with it and introduce change in a sustainable way is much more likely to deliver success. It will have a higher success rate, higher chance of a successful return, rather than pursue the shiny object and see it crash and burn. ? David Anderson (excerpt from the podcast below)

David has recently teamed up with Bob Lewis (Bob is a prolific author, his latest book is Bare Bones Project Management) to present a 2-day workshop on Business Change Management. This will include topics specific to Agile and Lean transition initiatives. They examine the source of organizational resistance to change, describe the seven components of an effective business change management plan, and show how to go beyond a ?Managed Transition? to achieve both Evolutionary Change and discontinuous, ?fork lift? change. More information on the workshop can be found at Business Change Management..

Workshop Dates:

  • Washington DC ? October 29-30, 2012

Apple iPad sales topped 100 million two weeks ago

Just two and a half years after creating the product line, Apple announced today it has already notched its 100 millionth iPad sold. While we're still expecting to see a new, smaller model (get all the 4th gen info, including the new mini right here) unveiled today Apple is leading off its tablet talk with some chest thumping. According to its stats, it sold more iPads in the June quarter than any one PC manufacturers sold of their entire lineup, a hefty feat even if you take into account customers waiting for Windows 8. It's also referencing data that says the iPad accounts for 91 percent of web traffic among tablets. If that's not enough, there's also love for the education sector with a new version of iBooks author, which should get plenty of use with 2,500 schools in the US using them, and 80 percent of the curriculum available in iBooks.

WordPress Backup Tool Review: BlogVault | Small Business Trends

Last year we did a post reviewing 10 backup tools and utilities for WordPress. There are plenty of options, but I came across the BlogVault WordPress backup system recently and felt it is an excellent solution for small business owners who simply don?t have time to fuss with the backup process.

BlogVault is a Web-based service that allows you to backup your entire WordPress blog or website with just a few simple clicks.

What you can see in the screenshot below is that BlogVault has automated the process of installing a WordPress plugin. You can manually install the plugin, if you prefer. I took the service through the automatic option and was pleasantly surprised at the thoughtful design and step-by-step guidance. Plans start at $9/month with a 7-day free trial.

As I have written before, many small business owners use WordPress not as a blog, but as the content management system for their business website. ?Backing up data in any Web environment demands consistency, and often, patience. But every one who has ever lost data, had a hard drive crash, or wanted piece of mind, knows that a process for daily or weekly backups is essential.

    What I Like about?BlogVault

    • It has a full test and restore option. Once you sign up, even on the 7-day free trial, BlogVault backs up your site. You then see in the admin dashboard that you can Test/Restore.? I used the free trial for purposes of this review.? I thought the system might show me a few pages, during the free trial stage, but was pleasantly surprised when it rebuilt my entire TechBizTalk site for me, on their Web server. In this screenshot below, you can see in the browser address bar that BlogVault has reconstructed my site on their server, with the core backup data. Every link worked!
    • You can see the backup history at a glance. So if something went wrong and you wanted to restore from a specific point in time, you could do it. They keep a running 30-day history.
    • Last, I love having an easy support and help center with any software I use. BlogVault has a help center, powered by Desk.com, and it answered most questions I had for myself and readers.

What I Would Like To See

    • A?nit-picky?item: They have an online chat option, when you are going through the backup process and need guidance. It is in the lower right corner and barely noticeable. I?d like to see that more prominent or mentioned somewhere else so you know to look for it if you get stuck.

Ultimately, BlogVault makes the online backup process simple and stress-free. Given that the whole idea of losing data, losing your website, losing your blog to a system crash with no backup is stress-inducing, the team at BlogVault worked hard to make sure they would reduce your concerns about a secure online backup plan.

    Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 ($599.99 direct) is the first superzoom camera to feature a fixed-aperture f/2.8 lens, which means that the same amount of light is captured, regardless of whether you are zoomed out at 25mm or all the way in at 600mm. It's a speedy performer, images are sharp, and videographers will appreciate the excellent 1080p30 video quality and the option to add an external microphone. The relatively fast aperture allows for shallow depth of field at longer focal lengths for stills and video alike. It's good enough to oust the Nikon Coolpix P510 ?as our Editors' Choice superzoom, although that camera remains a good buy for shooters on a tighter budget.

    Design and Features
Looking a lot like a scaled-down D-SLR, the FZ200 takes its design cues from other superzoom cameras. It measures 3.4 by 4.9 by 4.3 inches (HWD) and weighs about 1.3 pounds. A neck strap is included, but I found it most comfortable and convenient to use with a good wrist strap. The 24x lens is a power zoom design, which keeps the size down compared with a manual zoom camera like the Fujifilm X-S1, which measures 4.2 by 5.3 by 5.9 inches, and weighs 2.1 pounds.

You get two zoom controls?one built into the shutter release and the other on the left side of the lens barrel. The top plate of the camera houses the hot shoe, pop-up flash, stereo microphone, Record button, Drive Mode control, On/Off switch, and the programmable Fn1 button. Controls on the rear of the camera include the EVF/LCD toggle, a Play button, AF/AE Lock (which doubles as the programmable Fn2 control), ISO, White Balance, Self-Timer, and a programmable Fn3 button.

The 3-inch, 460k-dot rear LCD is hinged so you can adjust its position. It's not as sharp as the 921k-dot LCD found in the Nikon P510, but is sharp and bright enough for use on a sunny day. You're in for a pleasant surprise when you use the 1,312k-dot EVF?it's stunning. It's nearly as sharp as the eye-level display in the Fuji X-S1, and using the camera at your eye makes it easier to get a steady shot when the lens is zoomed in to any degree.

The camera doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that the competition boasts. The Coolpix P510 has a GPS module, which adds location data to your photos, a feature that nature photographers and vacationers who reach for a superzoom may miss. It does offer a hot shoe, so you can use an external flash or mic, a feature that is often omitted from cameras in this class. And you can't discount the benefits of an f/2.8 lens at a 600mm equivalent field of view. You can actually get a smooth, blurred background when working at the minimum focus distance and longest zoom setting. Even a larger manual zoom camera like the Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR , which is f/2.8 at the wide end, closes down to f/5.6 as you zoom all the way in?capturing only a quarter of the light that the FZ200 can manage.

Performance and ConclusionsPanasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 : Benchmark Tests
A speedy shooter, the FZ200 starts and shoots in just about 1.3 seconds, records a short 0.1-second shutter lag, and is able to grab a burst of 12 shots in just over a second. It can also shoot at 5.5 frames per second for 16 shots, or at 2 frames per second for as long as you'd like?assuming you stick to grabbing JPG files. Shooting in Raw+JPG limits your 2fps capture to about 13 frames before the rate slows. It bests the Canon SX40 HS , which requires 2.5 seconds to start and shoot, shoots a photo every 0.4 second, and notches a lengthy 0.5-second shutter lag.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the FZ200's lens. A result of 1,800 lines per picture height translates to a sharp image, which is right about where the FZ200 lands with its 1,811-line score. Noise is well controlled, at less than 1.5 percent through ISO 800. The Nikon P510 does better on paper, staying under this threshold through ISO 1600, but a close examination of the same scene side-by-side shows that the FZ200 is decidedly sharper at ISO 800. At ISO 1600 the FZ200 suffers from loss of image detail, but is still noticeably better than the Nikon P510. When you consider the Panasonic's Raw shooting capability and fixed f/2.8 lens you have a camera that is capable of capturing excellent images in a wide variety of lighting conditions.

Video is recorded at up to 1080p60 in AVCHD format. You can also opt for MP4 recording, but that tops out at 1080p30. The quality is excellent, with saturated colors and crisp detail. The stereo audio is polluted a bit by the sound of the lens zooming in and out and refocusing?it's not overbearing, but it is audible. There is a mic input and a hot shoe for mounting an external mic, which should be utilized for any serious video work. A mini HDMI port lets you connect the camera to an HDTV, and a proprietary USB port is on board for computer connectivity. Standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 is the best-performing superzoom we've tested, and that earns it our Editors' Choice award?in spite of its rather high $600 sticker price. It's got a fast f/2.8 lens, does well at higher ISO settings, produces sharp images, and video quality is excellent. If you're on a budget, the former winner in this category, the $430 Nikon Coolpix P510, remains a solid option with its longer 42x zoom range and sharper rear LCD. But it falls behind when it comes to the EVF and aperture, and it lacks the ability to connect an external microphone or flash.

    Ebook Information | Web Money

    Interview with EXPERTS ? PART 2 by Gary Durkin (c) 2004 ?
    All Rights Reserved Worldwide.

Following on the PART 1, where I outlined the basis and
reasons for doing a project like this, here is a list of 12
questions which you could use when contacting the Experts.
(you can change amend as you like to suit your project)

TWELVE QUESTIONS FOR INTERVIEWING THE REAL EXPERTS

    1. The Internet is jam-packed with Biz-Ops, Offers, Hype and
Promises. MLM, Pyramid Selling, Get Rich Quick Schemes,
Gifting Programs?????.. Each day thousands of new
people go online to find ways of replacing or supplementing
their income. What pointers / advice would you give to
anyone who is considering this and the obvious pitfalls they
    can encounter?

    2. One of the key ingredients to success, is Multiple Income
Streams. Personally, I am a firm believer in this but often
newbies AND NetVeterans alike make the assumption that by
simply joining every available program, they can achieve a
steady flow of multiple incomes, but in reality this hardly
ever happens. Are you a supporter of the MIS method and how
would you combine successfully different products, services
and / or offerings into one main business? And WHY?

    3. Often, figures are banded around that some 95% of people
on the Net do not make money, or even lose money online.
That figure is obviously difficult to prove accurately but
there is still some element of truth behind it. I have
helped many people to understand where the go wrong, but can
you give your personal top 3 reasons why you believe such a
    high proportion of people fail?

    4. Over the years, I have seen many people become
disheartened by the lack of ?instant financial
gratification?, or in other words ? making big bucks
overnight!? ? that they assume will happen as soon as they
go online. If we took the ?wake up and smell the coffee?
approach ? in your opinion how long should people
(especially the inexperienced) expect to wait before they
see some return of their investment, a steady flow of income
and of course, their first million dollars?! And ?..WHY?

    5. I run three businesses, generating seven figures a year
and personally earning six figures. But ? it is hard work,
very hard. The rewards are great and play-time is excellent!
I constantly strive to work smarter NOT harder, by
researching and learning (by successes AND failures!). There
is I believe, a misconception that you can run an online
business successfully, in a few hours (or less!) a week. Do
you subscribe to this opinion? How much effort do you view
as being optimal for developing, creating, growing and
sustaining a successful Internet Business? And of
    course?..WHY?

    6. Most, if not all the gurus, Big Dogs, and Top Marketers
tend to agree, that the real money is in the backend. In
other words, true profit comes from follow-up sales to
existing customers or to your opt-in list subscribers.
Again, I totally agree. However, one of the biggest problems
facing many online businesses (especially the new starters)
is actually getting customers, and building an opt-in list.
This all boils down to one thing ? TRAFFIC. No traffic, No
Prospects, No Customers, No Sales, No Back-end. No Profit.
Can you give your top 5 traffic producing tips that would
get a newbie off the ground, or even to enhance traffic to a
site / business who is looking to grow?

    7. Technology! There are so many products, systems and
software packages available today, it is overwhelming to
many. Often, people will buy every piece of software, all
the systems and every product because they think they need
it to succeed. However, that may not be the case. Do you
think a business can be created and run successfully with
just a few key elements? Which 5 ?things? do you suggest
that new entrepreneurs seriously need to consider to have a
successful online business. (I would prefer generic
recommendations rather than blatant plugs please!!)

    8. Products. Every business must sell something. Either a
product (physical or digital), a service, or even a concept
/ idea. There is a camp which recommends creating your own
products, and another which suggests selling someone else?s.
What are your feelings on this, what advice can you give and
what problems may be encountered which could be avoided with
    guidance?

    9. Marketing. This is the Big One! I have over ten years of
success in international sales, I have done (and still do)
research and study marketing techniques, ideas and methods.
I have bought and read thousands of dollars worth of eBooks,
Books, Courses and Training Materials ? by some (if not all)
of the worlds most successful netpreneurs and marketing
experts. I do this because it is something I love to do, I
compare and contrast various concepts ? then adopt and adapt
to my needs. But, this takes a great deal of time and money,
and not everyone can do this. So for those who do not have
the time or money to do this, what are your Top Five Tips
    for effective and efficient marketing?

    10. Affiliate / Associate Programs. Many recommend getting
involved in these as a doorway to selling products, others
suggest creating your own products or service then starting
your own Affiliate / Associate program. Some programs pay as
little as 5% commission, others pay up to 50% commission or
more. Some charge a fee to join up, others are free. Are
Affiliate Programs / Associate Programs a good idea? Are
they worth joining or even creating your own? What tips,
pointers, guidance and advice do you have on this subject?

    11. I would bet good money on this, but I strongly believe
that you have made mistakes in business over the years?..I
know I have! But of course, you have also had successes. Can
you list for me the top three mistakes you have had ? and
how you learned from them, plus your biggest three successes
in business??and how you learned from these too, and how
the readers can learn from your success and failure?

    12. So??..where do we go from here? What is the future
of the internet? How can eBusiness develop? What is YOUR
vision of things to come? If YOU controlled the WWW ? what
would YOU do? If you had to advise people on what to expect
in the future, what would you tell them?

    13. BONUS Question! Your chance to add anything else you
    want!

That?s it! Part 1 and Part 2 together, put it into action,
follow up, follow though, and create you own product, with
    help from the experts!

    Good luck.

Mazda CX-9 facelift makes world debut in Sydney

The ?new look? Mazda CX-9 has made its first global appearance at this year?s Australian?International?Motor Show in Sydney ? here are some live photos of it on the stand.?This is its second facelift since its launch in 2007; the first was in 2009.?The refreshed seven-seater will launch in Australia this December.

The car?s front and rear gets Mazda?s Kodo design treatment (first seen on the CX-5 and then the Mazda 6) while the interior gets some minor updates in the form of colours, materials and trim finishes, and an upgraded infotainment system. Interesting is how the grille?s lower chrome bar penetrates into the glass of the headlamps. We think on the outside it looks more confident all-round.

There are new 20-inch aluminium wheels and some new?i-ACTIVSENSE safety features as well, which include?Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring and High Beam Control.

Soldiering on is the 3.7 litre V6 that feeds its?273 hp and 367 Nm of twist via a six-speed automatic to either the front wheels or all wheels (depending on the version).?Other features on the CX-9 include Dynamic Stability Control, tri-zone climate control, reverse camera and cruise control. No SkyActiv or i-ELOOP regenerative braking, though.

Sting moves venue of Philippine concert

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Sting has moved the location of his "Back to Bass Tour" concert in the Philippines following a petition by environmentalists who said the original venue is owned by a conglomerate that plans to uproot 182 trees for a parking lot and mall expansion in a northern mountain city.

The SM Mall of Asia Arena said on Saturday that changing the site of the Dec. 9 concert was "the decision of the artist himself."

"Understandably, the known environment advocate artist was left with no choice in spite of the SM representatives' appeal," it said in a statement.

SM Prime Holdings, which operates SM malls and the arena on Manila Bay, is owned by the Philippines' richest man, mall mogul Henry Sy.

Environmentalists said in their petition that as a champion of the environment, "Sting can't be saving rainforests and enabling SM to rape the environment at the same time!"

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler established The Rainforest Foundation in 1989 to protect tropical rainforests and the people who live there.

Arena business manager Arnel Gonzales told The Associated Press that the venue became "collateral damage" in the environmentalists' campaign.

"With this successful move to stop Sting from holding the concert at SM MOA Arena, and referring to the venue as an 'oppressor,' it is now looking more like the court battle has extended from saving trees, to ruining a corporate giant's reputation completely," the arena said in its statement.

A local court has temporarily stopped the mall expansion plans in northern Baguio city.

Karlo Marko Altomonte, who initiated the petition, wrote Sting's foundation saying that removing the trees would significantly increase air pollution and the risk of landslides and flooding in an area near schools.

"Thank you, Sting, for helping us defend our environment, our heritage, our home," he wrote on his Facebook page.

    Hi all,

I have been with my boyfriend for 2 years and we are in our early twenties. He has a friend who he met just before he met me, when we started seeing each other they were not very close. From about 6 months into the relationship i noticed her name quite a bit through social media and in his phone (Not stalking, just noticing over his shoulder).

This friendship became quite close towards the one year mark. They saw each other in friendship groups and began to see each other alone. They went for 'drives in his car' and to local fast food outlets other than hanging out in pubs and clubs in groups. I began to notice she contacted him quite a bit through social media and texting. I told him that it bugged me a little she contacted him so often. He palmed it off as no big deal. All of a sudden she was contacting him daily and they were hanging out more than him and i hung out. They even went to the drive ins together!!!!

I became very upset at this point and told him this friendship was very uncomfortable for me and was crossing the line in certain aspects. We had a huge fight, he told her and she got angry at me as well. She blocked me from facebook and im still blocked to this day! (She had always been pleasant to me before this btw). She has shown in so many ways that she likes him but he rejects that. I came to the point where i wanted him to not have contact with her at all (yes i know i cant control his friendships etc). We ended up fighting for a few weeks about it and he was willing to make sacrifices for me such as seeing me more etc. I still wasn't happy at this point. He then got to the point where he told her they couldnt be friends, they had a massive fight and didnt speak for 2 months. One night he was bored while i was at work and messaged her to meet up as i found out through a friend. He did not tell me this and lied when i asked him what he did that night. I then became upset because he promised he would do that for me but went back on his word and in turn lied to me. I realised then that i couldnt control what he does and that he has made moderate sacrifices for me so why should i not do it for him?

It has been a few moths since then and ive communicated to him that im still upset with how i was treated by both of them. He is reassuring that he is not attracted to her whatsoever and i have nothing to worry about at all. I believe he wouldnt cheat on me because he knows the pain of being cheated on himself. He has morals and respect too which makes me feel a bit better.

They are now only hanging out rarely, maybe once a month and im still blocked on facebook by her. I feel now i have much resentment in this relationship but im still very much inlove with him.

Im convinced by her actions that she likes him very much and im scared he's emotionally attached to this woman and enjoys the 'attention'. I agree she is unattractive however they get on well and have the same interests. She is saved in his mobile as a guy friends name when i went snooping and he fails to tell me when they hang out. He says so i dont become upset yeah right just to save his arse!

He wants his cake and to eat it too? Or am i the irrational and controlling girlfriend?

Should i be still worried that he will develop emotional feelings for her? Will she cling onto him forever?

    Sunset--dump him STAT.

You said they were not close but only grew close WHILE you were having a relationship with him. Going to dinner, drive-ins, drinking together and lying about it to you means they were "dating." Those are the things you do when you are dating someone. Their relationship is completely inappropriate. If she were a better woman she would have totally backed off. Bl-cking you from her FB was a complete and total b*tchy move. She has boundary issues but guess what--so does your "boyfriend." He does not respect you enough to have a mature, committed relationship. Talking daily and texting? Hanging out more than he does with you? (Even if that curtailed since the big fight you had-it's completely inappropriate).

You are not happy with the status quo. And you will never trust their relationship. And with good reason. So I say dump him and never have any contact with him again. He is not the one for you.

I recently dated a guy who is best friends with his ex girlfriend (who is married!) They speak & text daily, sometimes even while he and I were out on dates they'd be texting! They go to lunch & hang all the time. We had to end it cause that was not going to work for me. I later found out it has caused massive problems in both her marriage and relationships he's had.

You are not the weird one. They are. Let her have him. You deserve so much better. Cut this zero and find a hero!

Tell him: "Boyfriend--this relationship isn't working for me. We have very different views about relationships and what it means to be in one. Our boundaries are very different. I don't think we should see eachother anymore." If he presses, then yes, explain to him very clearly. (but don't go crazy, be emotionless?the calmer you are, the better, tell him: " I feel your relationship with X is inappropriate and the fact that you've lied to me about things before makes me not want to see you anymore. I want to be with someone who doesn't lie to me." That's it. You don't have to justify anything any further. Dump him and carry on with your life. No contact, ok?

You have already spent 2 years (omg) in this fvckery and foolishness so GET OUT NOW so you don't waste any more time!

Thanks jellybeans but she is not an x there is no history what so ever. I agree that if there was I'd be out straight away, no doubt! Who am I though to control his friends though? If he's going to cheat he's going to cheat whether I try and stop it or not I see! He's not the cheating type at all he's been through it and wouldn't want to see me hurt...

First planet found in star system next door

Meeting the neighbours is normally easier than this. After years of searching, astronomers have finally spotted an Earth-mass planet in Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system to our own. Although the planet orbits too close to its parent star to host life, its discovery ups the chance of the system also hosting hospitable worlds.

Alpha Centauri looks like a single point of light from Earth, but it contains two bright stars that share a relatively close binary orbit, including one that looks a lot like our sun. This binary pair is in our cosmic backyard, about 4.3 light years away, spurring great interest in its ability to host planets.

"It is the most followed star in the search for planets," says Xavier Dumusque of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland. Finding such worlds, however, proved to be a challenge. So far, planet hunters have ruled out the presence of gas giants akin to Jupiter in Alpha Centauri. Finding smaller planets with the methods available takes patience.

Using the La Silla Observatory in Chile, it still took Dumusque and colleagues four years to spot the planet around Alpha Centauri B, the smaller of the two stars.

The painstaking process included around 450 observations of the slight gravitational wobble the planet induces in Alpha Centauri B as it orbits the star. The task was made even more difficult by Alpha Centauri B reaching the peak of its solar cycle during the observations, increasing noise in the data.

    Lava land

The team calculates that the new planet is 1.13 times the mass of Earth, which means it is likely to have a rocky composition. However, with a "year" of just over three Earth days, this rocky body is not our planet's twin.

"The surface temperature must be hundreds ? thousands ? of degrees. There is perhaps lava floating on the planet," says Dumusque. Still, planets tend not to be loners, so the Alpha Centauri system should have more. There's a chance these undetected worlds are in the habitable zone, the region around a star most likely to support life as we know it.

"I'm really thrilled by the news, it's just great," says Javiera Guedes at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, who in 2008 had predicted that it would be possible to spot a planet in Alpha Centauri, given the amount of data collected.

She says that if the finding holds up, further observations over a few more years could reveal a planet in the system's habitable zone. "I just hope the result stands the test of time as more data is gathered," Guedes says.

If you're hoping to visit the neighbours, though, you may want to pack a few books for the trip. Even with the current record holders for the world's fastest spacecraft, the Helios sun probes, the journey to Alpha Centauri would take 19,000 years ? and that's assuming you travel at top speed for the whole journey, which is unlikely.

Mark Millar Talks Fox's Marvel Universe

20th Century Fox Marvel Movie Universe

As Marvel Studios ventures forth, growing their interconnected comic book film universe, and Marvel Comics prepares to relaunch many of their main ongoing books, Twentieth Century Fox hopes to successfully implement something equally as ambitious with their own Marvel films.

To do this, they?ve enlisted the help of Mark Millar, the brain behind several major Marvel Comics events and series. And as suspected, he will aid Fox in pushing forward towards an interconnected, ?cohesive? Marvel cinematic universe of their own.

The official announcement regarding Millar?s signing with Fox was made two weeks ago, detailing the comic creator?s position as ?creative consultant on the studio?s upcoming projects based on Marvel Comics properties.? To us, this was immediately?reminiscent of Joss Whedon?s recent three-year exclusive deal with Marvel Studios where he will help organize their upcoming films leading up to?The Avengers 2, which he will write and direct. Fox now had their own overseer of sorts who could potentially help not only Bryan Singer in fleshing out the X-Men universe into something bigger, but have those movies share the same space as?Fantastic Four, a property they?re rebooting with Josh Trank (Chronicle).

X-Men - Fantastic Four Crossover Movie

As it turns out, that?s exactly the case. In chatting with?SFX, Mark Millar teased Fox?s big picture plans:

?Fox have said that they want to build a cohesive universe and I?d personally like this to work in?complement?to the Marvel one. It would be cool if these universes didn?t contradict each other so if you went to see Spidey, The Avengers, the X-Men, etc, as a viewer you would have no idea that all three are coming from different studios. I?d love to make it look like they?re all just happening in one place.

?I don?t think it?s something anyone would want to rush into. Following that Marvel model, we want to establish things first. If you had a Fantastic Four relaunch, and Wolverine and the X-Men were in it, I think it would distract you from the Fantastic Four. You can make people aware that they?re existing in the same universe without making it a big crossover movie but it would be an injustice to the Fantastic Four not to make their first movie all about them.?

We already know? The Wolverine is distancing itself from?X-Men Origins: Wolverine in that it?s more of a standalone story than a sequel. From Millar?s words,?Fantastic Four is similarly attempting to stand on its own two feet before they rush into crossing all of the characters together. Daredevil, as of last week, is now back with Marvel and therefore doesn?t fit into the equation.

X-Men First Class Days of Future Past Header

The most interesting bit is how Millar specifically uses the word ?compliment? in describing how Fox?s Marvel cinematic universe can exist alongside Disney-Marvel?s Avengers-headlined one. With each studio owning the rights to different sets of characters, there can be no crossover between the live-action?Avengers and?X-Men, even if they all find themselves in New York at a given time. Although, if the studios can come to some sort of agreement, like Sony and Marvel almost did by having a reference to The Amazing Spider-Man in The Avengers, perhaps there can be minor nods and Easter Eggs back-and-forth, to at least reference major events.

This sentiment was also shared by X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner who didn?t hesitate in expressing her love of the idea of having the X-Men and?The Avengers crossover one day. That?s not going to happen, but with? The Amazing Spider-Man?and?Fantastic Four both starting anew, and?X-Men potentially reshaping itself with Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn?s time travel tale?X-Men: Days of Future Past, this would be the opportune time to start paying tribute to each franchise?s respective continuities. Then again, this arguably wouldn?t serve to benefit Marvel Studios since they couldn?t use these other superheroes to fight global threats, where they would in the books.

If you missed it, head to page 2 to read the letter Mark Millar wrote to his fans about the new gig after it was announced.
