I made these hexagons by using a square punch on random double sided patterned paper and folding two of the corners in to the center but leaving the other two open.??I then glued them down to the page and to hold them better, I machine stitched the the three lines of these shapes.??I love the way it makes them look quilted and all the random colors working together.
Quilts remind me of women, and specifically older women in my family, I have inherited a few quilts from my grandmothers and great-aunts.??I also inherited thirteen big boxes of the genealogy materials that my dad and grandfather accumulated; while there is so much there in terms of family trees etc, there are few stories and the stories that they did find are mostly male-centered stories about immigrating to the US and about soldiers in various wars; but there are almost no stories about the women from my family.
I have been wanting to research my family history for the stories for a long time now and my kids are getting older so I have a bit of time to work on our family history; I am incorporating this pursuit into my hobby of scrapbooking so that I'll be able to fill in stories and, if nothing else, when my kids inherit my boxes of family history, the stuff inside will be pretty to see.
I had these three photos of women at various stages of life but none of the photos were labels, so while I'm sure they were from my Dad's side of the family, I have no idea who they are.??I want to open up their stories - so those hexagon shapes on the page reminded me of envelopes opening up - so I thought this page could be about opening up the stories from the past and approaching the family history with lots of questions and curiosity; this inspired the title "Who Was She?"
Journaling at the bottom: "Oh sure, my dad and grandpa found lots of names and dates in our family tree; but I want to know who these women and girls were and know their stories."
Supplies:??Little Yellow Bicycle stickers; American Crafts letter stickers; square punch, machine stitching, random double sided patterned papers.
