Gigabyte P2542G gaming laptop hands-on (video) -- Engadget
While we managed to get our hands on Gigabyte's latest graphics card-toting Ultrabook back at CeBIT, we've just finished handling the P2542G (its high-end gaming sibling) at the laptop and motherboard maker's UK launch event. Packing a 15.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080 display, it runs on an Ivy Bridge Core i7-3610QM, with a 2GB NVIDIA GTX 660M card to power PC gaming's latest and greatest. Add in a Blu-ray player and THX-certified dual-woofer sound system and you have the makings of pretty capable beast -- not to mention looking the part with a yellow paint job and dual exhaust vents along the back edge. Gigabyte's gaming iteration looks a bit chunkier than both the Carbon X10 and the U2442, but it shouldn't weigh down the bags of those looking for a portable gaming machine, coming in at 2.6kg (5.7lbs). While there's the Blu-ray drive, the laptop's storage customization options top out at 1TB, meaning there should be plenty of space for anyone looking to import their existing Steam collection. There's a 128GB SSD built-in too which should sort out any sluggish start-ups. We took to the chiclet keyboard to briefly play Max Payne, and the laptop offered up a detailed, smooth gaming environment. In the darkened confines of the press event, the screen seemed plenty bright enough, with decent viewing angles meaning there shouldn't be many complaints if you decide to use the device for media consumption. It launches this week in the UK, priced at ?1,300, but we're still waiting on news of a US price and release date.

Last week we got an email from ski lift ticket e-retailer Liftopia about a big deal it inked to be the exclusive tech platform for the Mountain Collective, a new partnership of four elite ski resorts: Alta, Aspen/Snowmass, Jackson Hole, and Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows. That news was interesting, but almost more interesting was the fact that Liftopia was doing business and reaching out to press in August -- somehow I'd assumed this would be the off-season for the company. Predicting outbreaks of dengue fever according to climate
ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Dengue fever, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, affects hundreds of millions of people in around one hundred tropical countries and causes 25 000 deaths per year. In the absence of a vaccine, determining the factors that influence epidemics to predict them better is a real public health challenge. One scientific study, conducted in New Caledonia, demonstrates the essential role of the local climate in epidemic dynamics. IRD researchers and their New Caledonian colleagues(1) analysed epidemiological and climatological data gathered in Noumea over forty years. They highlighted the correlation between specific weather conditions and dengue fever outbreaks.
This work enabled statistical models to be drawn up explaining and predicting viral episodes. The Caledonian public health authorities have already integrated these tools into their decision-making strategies and a similar approach in other South Pacific countries is being developed, with a new collaborative regional programme.
Mainly vectored by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, dengue fever is present in one hundred or so countries in the intertropical zone. It affects one hundred million people, causing more or less severe symptoms such as fever, muscular pain, headaches, digestive disorders and even hemorrhaging, causing 25 000 deaths per year throughout the world. No vaccine or specific treatment exists to this day.
The South Pacific region is regularly the seat of dengue fever epidemics, of increasing frequency and amplitude. In New Caledonia, the last epidemic in 2009 affected 8 400 people. It is the second most affected French overseas territory. Like for other vector-borne diseases, the occurrence or not of epidemic outbreaks is the consequence of complex interactions between humans, the virus and vector mosquitoes, influenced by environmental and climatic factors. Until now, these mechanisms have remained poorly understood.
In Noumea, a reliable system of monitoring of dengue fever cases has existed for forty years. In parallel, daily meteorological measurements have been made since the 1950's. IRD scientists and their partners(1) compared these monthly, quarterly and annual meteorological and epidemiological data over 40 years. The existence of these long series enabled a statistical model to be constructed that shows the essential role of the local climate in the dynamic of epidemics in Noumea. The scientists also accurately identified the meteorological conditions that were decisive in the occurrence of epidemics.

In order to analyse 40 years of data, doctors, entomologists, climatologists, mathematicians and forecasters first studied the seasonal variability in the disease, setting apart epidemic from non-epidemic years. All the outbreaks were similarly distributed, with a start in January, a peak between March and May, and ending in July.
In a second phase, researchers analysed the variability in the appearance of dengue fever epidemics from one year to the next. To do so, an "explanatory" model was developed. For the first time, it revealed that the occurrence of epidemics in the greater Noumea area could be explained by the two variables of temperature and relative humidity. The same scenario has been operating over 40 years. If the temperature exceeds 32?C for more than 12 days in January, February and March -- or during the southern summer -- and humidity exceeds 95 % for less than 12 days in January, a wave of dengue fever occurs. And vice versa: when cooler summer temperatures are combined with wetter weather, an epidemic occurs in almost all cases.

Again, thanks to the long series of data, a second "predictive" model was drawn up to anticipate epidemics from one year to the next. This time, it is based on maximum temperature and relative humidity values for the months of October to December in the previous year. These results are crucial. Using the system developed, public health authorities can anticipate orders for mosquito repellent and insecticide, organise vector control, optimise treatment systems, etc.
El Ni?o and dengue fever: no direct link
Larger-scale climate variables such as El Ni?o / La Ni?a influence the local climate. The phenomenon occurs every 3 to 7 years. Contrary to belief, the study did not reveal any statistical link between epidemics and La Ni?a in New Caledonia. These results suggest that the influences of this type of climate variable on dengue fever outbreaks depend on complex geographic specificities.
From an operational point of view, the AeDenPAC programme(2), led by the New Caledonia Pasteur Institute and involving numerous IRD scientists and other partners(3), is under way. It aims at developing similar models and extending research on the entomological level in the South Pacific, in particular in French Polynesia and Fiji. This expansion will gradually feed knowledge of the impact of global warming on the dynamic of dengue fever epidemics in the Pacific.

Career meets family ? I'm a work-at-home mom? | New Mom, New ...
I?m?a career woman.
Back when I had to go in to the office from time to time
In college, I had clear goals of getting an advanced degree and pursuing a career.
And while keenly?aware of the challenges for working mothers, I have always wanted kids.
In fact, I did my senior project in college on this very topic.? It wasn?t until recently, when going back to work after Zoe was born, that I began to?experience the challenges for working mothers on a personal level.
The big picture
First of all, I find it completely ridiculous that women (myself included) feel the need to decide between a career and a family ? men do not face this same scenario.? No one ever questions whether or not men will go back to work after having kids.? Women shouldn?t have to feel the need to choose either.? If a woman or a man wants to quit the workforce to raise children, then great.?? But let?s remove the assumptions.
Secondly, it frustrating that our government isn?t more family friendly.? For instance, it would be nice if our country had a paid maternity leave program.? Right now it?s left to the company to decide if the time off is paid or not.? My maternity leave seemed to fly by.? I definitely wish I had taken more time off; however, after the six to eight week allotted time, the leave is no longer paid.? At that point in our lives, we couldn?t afford to go without my paycheck.
My situation
Since I work from, easing back into things was much better than if I had to get all dressed up to go in the office.? Thankfully, I could stay in my pajamas and be near my baby to nurse on demand.
My husband also worked from home back then so we had a great system going on.? He watched her during the day when I was busy.? And I had her when he was busy.? I thought that set-up would last longer than it did, but then he got the call from Hollywood.
Initially, I was okay being back at work.? But after the move, I had to adjust to my husband leaving the house for work.? I got very upset.? Our former system was no longer?I now had to find childcare.? Daycare wasn?t an option; so I looked for babysitters.? It took a while; I wasn?t in a rush.? In the beginning, I was relieved when the potential sitters didn?t work out.? I kept thinking, Why do I want to pay someone else to spend time with my baby?? I want to be the one to play with her!? I complained often and loudly to my husband.? I repeatedly asked him when I could quit my job.
The revelation
It wasn?t until months later that I realized:?I really DO want to work.? I LIKE my job.? Beyond motherhood, I enjoy being involved in interesting projects; being challenged; and helping people.? And just like that, the complaining stopped.? I was at peace.
It helped to find a very sweet babysitter.? Zoe loves her.? I?m pretty sure it would be a different story if I had to leave Zoe the whole day.? I am thankful that my company promotes working from home.
I love that I can have lunch with her and still be close to breastfeed.? Right now, I have the best of both worlds; and I can?t complain.? I get to have a fulfilling career and be home with my baby.
Being a mother is tough enough ? and adding a full-time job on top of motherhood is ridiculously challenging.? But it can be done.? It can be done well.? It means you have to really prioritize what needs to get done on a daily basis.
Hopefully, our country will move towards a system that makes it easier for families.? Easier to pursue our passions for career and family.
